Laguna Beach follows sophomore's lead

SANTA ANA - Laguna Beach recorded its first postseason victory in 21 seasons by beating Santa Ana, 39-14, in a CIF-SS Southern Division opening-round game Thursday night at Santa Ana Stadium.

The Breakers (5-6) received a record-setting performance from sophomore receiver Chris Paul and a second-half shutout from their defense.

Paul scored five touchdowns, including a school-record four on pass receptions.

“I couldn’t have done it without the offensive line giving us time to throw,” he said. “We came in here not knowing what to expect. Everyone said we were the underdogs. We just came out and played as hard as we could.”

The Breakers led, 20-14, at halftime. The game remained that way when the fourth quarter started.

Paul scored his fourth touchdown on a 5-yard catch from quarterback Austin Paxson and the Breakers led, 26-14, with 7:13 to play.

On the Saints’ next drive, John Snedegar intercepted his second pass, returning it 39 yards for the score.

On the Saints’ ensuing possession, Paul picked up a fumble and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown.

Snedegar’s first interception stalled Santa Ana’s drive at the Breakers 22.

The Saints (7-4) tied the score at 14 on quarterback Chris Ledesma’s 1-yard keeper 4:35 before intermission.

The Breakers answered when Paul scored on a 9-yard pass with 33 seconds to go and Laguna Beach led, 20-14.

Paul opened the scoring with a 40-yard touchdown catch. The Saints tied it at 7 on Vincent Gonzalez’s 24-yard touchdown reception.

The Breakers regained the lead when Paxson connected with Paul on a 38-yard scoring pass.

“It was a great team victory,” Paul said. “We just wanted to keep taking it to them.”

I feel sorry for the corner.
    Saints weak!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ray says:

yup terrible and embarrassing losing to a pathetic team like laguna no offense to them but they lost to costa mesa and we blew out costa mesa so that makes no sense to me what so ever

  • Morpheous says:

Last night, the Laguna connection between Paul and Paxson was the key to winning. And, several powerful defensive stands to limit Santa Ana to 14 points. GO BEACH!

  • Pappy says:

SA loses to the SECOND place team from the worst league in the Southern Division. I guess Saints weren't as good as they thought.

  • Morpheous says:

Big time performance by Laguna's offensive line; pass protection and busting open huge holes for Zack. The running game was sweet.

  • looks like Rays team is pathetic!!!! and Pappy thinks he knows
the ranks in divisions!!! sour grapes

  • Saints beat Costa Mesa 41-9 in preseason.
Breakers lost to Costa Mesa last week 38-30.

That's why they play the games on the field.

  • Bradon C says:

Ray no offense...They had over 400 yards against Garden Grove, 452 yards against Costa Mesa and have averaged over 30 points after week 2. They played a very tough pre-season, if they played Santa Ana schedule they would have been 7-3 as well going into playoffs.

  • Pappy says:

Garden Grove now Santa Ana, teams that play weak preseason schedules are falling faster than the stock market. I'm glad LB beat up SA, but please "go breakers go", nobody shakes in their boots when you tell them you're from the mighty Orange Coast League.

  • Here's what I saw last night covering the game.

The Breakers did a wonderful job in the first half throwing to Paul. He had like 9 catches and 142 yards.
He caught one pass after halftime, a 5yd TD pass.

In the second half, the Saints started playing more pass coverage, so the Breakers pounded them on the ground with Smith.

Santa Ana's only offense came from RB Peralta. They basically handed him the ball every time. After halftime, Laguna Beach made the adjustments and were ready.

  • CARLOS ARIAS says:

C.T.: How many rebounds and assists did Chris Paul end up with?Did he get a triple-double?

  • Country says:

What does the Breaker mascot look like ?

I'm picturing a dude decked out in Adidas gear from head to toe standing in a b-boy stand on a flatten card board box.

  • No, but he actually ended up dropping one pass. It was amazing. I couldn't believe my eyes.
This kid was catching every ball. Jumping up. Stopping and reaching back. Juggling and holding on.

But I'm with ya, Los, guy needs to fill up the other stats to be a first-round fantasy pick on my team.

When I was talking with Paul after the game, he definitely was deflecting all credit to the team. Very nice act Chris Paul, setting a positive example for your teammates.

  • Country:
That is a fantastic mascot idea.

You should copyright that before they use it.

Breakers is a reference to the waves breaking, thus the Breakers.

But, Country, I'm all for your idea.
In fact, we could get Los to dress up in that gear and break-dance.
    Los, you down?

  • HBKing says:

Didn't realize Santa Ana had spanked Costa Mesa so bad. Laguna dominated Costa Mesa also and should never have lost. Somehow they went flat after jumping out to a 22-0 lead and left a TD on the 1 yard line going into halftime. So Santa Ana shouldn't be too surprised. Breakers? Laguna never should have changed their name from the Artists. Or since they did, maybe they should have chosen something more appropriate like the Litigators, Developers or Surgeons. The Artists was the best though - Fun name to beat other teams with, especially in Football.

  • HBKing:
Yes, Artists was an awesome nickname.

Any idea on what happened and why they changed it?

  • HBKing says:

Hey Chris: I believe several years ago an overly proactive LBHS ASB president was looking to make a lasting impression for his presidency, so put the name change up to the student body for a vote. Apparently those students had grown self-conscious about being called Artists (?) and it passed. It was a sad trashing of a long tradition of cool artistic history - Kids those days, I tell ya. Regardless-Go LB!

  • Laurie Hamnquist says:

Chris Tobolski, I like your comments about last nights Laguna win! You were obviosuly at the game and saw waht I saw. Not every school can be Division1, but it was sure fun to watch Paxson/Paul. That's for REAL. A class act!

  • Very interesting.
Has there ever been talk about changing it back?

  • LB Alum says:

I was an Artist and they should have never changed the name. Glad to see Coach Todd getting a playoff win. Great guy and a good representative of the school. I was at the Costa Mesa game and Beach definitely made some big mistakes that cost them the game. The biggest was at the end of the first half by not getting any points.

  • greenbassman says:

    Hey Guys,
    Regarding SA Saints

    OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LB played a good game. They looked well prepared and it showed.
    Especially their defense
    Passing was hot too.

Saints were flat and I believe they came into the game taking LB too lightly!!! I heard they didn't have a good week of practice and it showed on the field

Two things I noticed re: the saints.

their QB/Ledesma was "way off" that night....................................
timing, focus & nerves I think....................... I've seen him pass 10 for 10 and throw bullets in heavy traffic. That night he choked,

Also, the saints staff were out coached by LB staff.
Their offensive coordinator was too conservative with his play calling
Time to get somebody with more experienced!!!

    Crap!!!!!!

Best of Luck to Laguna Bch next week against CDM cause your gonna need it.

    Peace

  • Ray says:

LOOKS LIKE THE SAINTS CHOKED ....IF THE SAINTS TEAM THAT DEFEATED SEGERSTROM WOULD HAVE SHOWED UP WHOOO DIFFERENT STORY!!!! MAN WE NEED TO GET BACK TO THE SAINTS OF THE 80'S,, WHERES COACH DICK HILL WHEN U NEED HIM
    (MAY HE REST IN PEACE)

  • sammysaint says:

    we need coach clemens back!!

  • I heard quite a few Saints fans yelling from the stands that their team got out-coached.
Just some sights and sounds of the game.

  • dizzle says:

thats ridiculous. laguna was not in a bad league at all, obviously. especially since they managed to get the w against the saints.

  • the dude says:

LB bring it to those sea queens next week, they dont know what they have in store for them, the expect an easy win, CRUSH THEM!!!!!!!!!!

  • greenbassman says:

    Hey Chris T. @ OCVARSITY,
    &
    Sammysaint
Re: Saints fan yelling at the staff................... I believe the ring leader was relative of a certain 2nd stringer. He wanted the head coach to put his 2nd string/Relative to replace that Peralta kid @ RB.

    Only one problem!

Number 7/Peralta was the only one producing on offense!!!!
    You dummies in the stand!!!.

Sure..... I might agree with you they were out coached but dont have a hissy-fit at the game. That kind of reaction is very distracting to the coaching staff and the
    players.

    Dear Sammy Saint

    Re: Bring back Coach Clemens,

    No!

    Bring back Coach Kirk Byers............................................
As defensive coordinator! The DB's last year were awsome

  • daddieo says:

I'm an Artist and proud of it!
However I'm very proud of my son and his Team this year. The coaches got my son in shape,he went from 205 spring time to 175 strong. Go Beach
