Girls Tennis: Valencia, Dana Hills, St. Margaret's into CIF finals

No. 1 Valencia swept in singles and beat La Reina, 14-4, in CIF-SS Division III semifinal action Thursday afternoon at Valencia High School.

In Division I play, No. 2 Dana Hills earned a big victory over No. 3 Palos Verdes, 14-4, in a rematch of last year's semifinals at Palos Verdes High School.

In Division IV play, No. 1 St. Margaret's beat Rio Mesa, 15-3. The Tartans reached the quarterfinals last year.  Coach Rick Trager said his team played really well, noting the work of seniors Mary Walsh, Allie Davis and Serene Haddad.

Both the Tigers and Dolphins are defending champs.

The Tigers received sweeps Thursday from No. 1 Sarah Blair, No. 2 Candance Wu (who swept at love), and No. 3 Natalie McKay.

McKay's first round victory against La Reina's best player, 7-6, gave the Tigers a 4-2 lead after the first round.

The Dolphins also swept in singles against Palos Verdes, while doubles team Leyla Simmons and Victoria Wing did the same.

Both finals are Monday at the Claremont Club.

"We are getting better balance with singles and doubles," Tigers coach Mike McCall said. "That's one thing I feel good about. I think our depth is our strength."

  • Non-CDM Players says:

The Register's OC Varsity tennis coverage should be re-named "CDM Girls Tennis" news. It is extremely biased and it's obvious that CDM is favored. Each week there is a highlighted CDM tennis player - as if there are no other deserving players from any other teams worthy of mention. Also, isn't it interesting any articles written about CDM players are detailed and cover an entire page verses 2 measley paragraghs about any other team. What ever happened to unbiased news reporting? If this continues, OC Register will continue to lose credibility.

  • parent says:

The CDM girls deserve to be in the news. They have worked hard during the season and in CIF. Did they mention anything about CDM going to the finals? I don't think so. The OC Register is not biased at all in any way. They have had lots of girls tennis articles on other schools and other players besides the ones from CDM. CDM is the top-seed in CIF and knocked off Dana Hills. That school deserves to have recognition for their success while maintaining a great attitude on the court. Also, measly is the proper way of spelling that word.

  • Tiger Fan says:

As a non CDM parent, I think Chris and Artie have done a fantastic job covering girls tennis this season. Artie made an extraordinary effort to reach out to all coaches in order to ensure that deserving girls were recognized and Chris is beginning to do the same. I believe Chris was at three different matches this week, and only one featured CDM.
