GARDEN GROVE - The Norwalk rushing tandem of Jose Guzman and Ray Craig combined for 342 yards and four scores to lead the visiting Lancers to a 38-6 victory over host Garden Grove in a CIF-SS Southern Division first-round game Thursday night at Garden Grove High. (Full game stats.)

Garden Grove ends its season at 9-2.

Guzman led the way, rushing for 221 yards on 24 carries while Craig added 121 yards on 16 carries. Each had two scores.

The Lancers (7-4) scored on four first-half possessions to take control early. Despite being consistently pinned in its own end of the field, Norwalk used its offensive line to open gaping holes in the Argonauts defense. With the rushing attack working well, Lancers quarterback Dominique Diaz wouldn’t even attempt a pass until the final minute of the first half, going 1 for 5 for 15 yards with one interception.

The Norwalk defense did its job as well, allowing just 96 yards and holding running back Sean Young to just 7 yards on 13 carries. Young had rushed for more than 1,300 yards during the regular season.

Guzman capped a 65-yard opening drive with a 17-yard run and Craig ran in for the 2-point conversion to give Norwalk an 8-0 lead with barely four minutes gone. Garden Grove came back and scored on a 28-yard Julio Suarez field goal to cut the deficit to five.

It would be as close as the Argos would get all night, Norwalk marching 67 yards in seven plays on the ensuing drive, Craig finishing with a 3-yard TD run.

Lucky Moemoe’s fumble recovery would eventually set up a 33-yard Suarez field goal early in the second to cut the lead to 10. That would end the scoring for Garden Grove.

Julio Macias’s 32-yard scoring run and a 3-yard TD dive by Craig gave Norwalk a 30-6 lead at the half. The Lancers would get just one TD in the second half.

  • ITS TIME TO STOP TALKING AND ASK FOR A NEW COACHING STAFF AT GGHS......YOUR KIDS DESERVE BETTER.....GOOD LUCK NEXT YEAR.....

  • Deja vu all over again!! The Midget popwarner football team could beat this GG football team hands down. Its coaching for sure, but more than that it's the Garden Grove league.Nothing good has come from this league since La Quinta, with Zeno in 1984 & Takahashi, and also the Bolsa team that took it all. So dont expect much in the future and you wont be let down..man this game was over before i sat down with my popcorn!!!

  • ARGO TRUE FAN!! says:

GARDEN GROVE NEED TO HIRE MORE COACHING STAFF AND A NEW OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR.......GARDEN GROVE PLAYERS GOT TALENT. BUT COACHING STAFF DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO USE THEM...GOOD LUCK NEXT YEAR.

  • Pappy says:

Funny how when GG was undefeated, ranked as high as #2 they were the toast of the town. You have to play a tougher preseason schudule to better prepare you for league and playoffs. Where did going 5-0 get you? Argos had a good season. I've been warning everybody about the Suburban League teams. Norwalk is the best of the bunch.

  • POPS says:

GG had as much of a chance winning the lottery as they did winning this game! When you play cream puffs during the preseason...this is what happens! To acheive VICTORY you must deal with inconveniences....GG demonstrated that they're just not ready for prime time, hence the number 3 spot in the league....and Norwalk proved that last night...leaving no doubt! Sean who? Norwalk made Young look old - !CHOKE! I'm just sayin'.....

  • Country says:

Toughen up that preseason schedule to prepare for the playoffs. The GGL did you no favor.

  • Rigorokuz says:

Ok I have one thng to say the suburban League does not belong in this division. Thier move down from div 5 is like saying we want a championship for our league. So lets beat up on div 9 teams and win one. The suburban league will win this title hands down every year for the next two years. The suburban league if anything belongs in Div 7 with the La sernas, whittiers, santa fes ect...where the competion is equal. So do not think of it like you garden grove team is no good its the Suburban league they do not belong here...Good luck next year...I mean look at the league that took up the suburban leagues spot they are getting murdered at that level when they need to be back here..Exp. Magnolias(part of leaue that took suburbans old league spot) drubbing last night....

  • ppgcart says:

The GG boys played their hearts out this year. Thanks for a good year guys!! Okay, now let me vent. GG offensive play calling was a joke. Let's talk about bad play calling. Can someone tell me why on 4th and 5 down by 24 points in the 4th quarter on their 40 yard line, we are punting? C'mon coach, grow some balls or at least some common sense..... But the biggest problem is the defensive coaching (or lack of). Does the defensive coach know the definition of "containment"? I don't think so. I was on the sideline and did not see the defensive coach actually coach his players. Was it my imagination or was the defensive alignment/assignment totally changed for this game. THAT"S A GREAT IDEA!!!--- HMMMMMM....LET'S ABANDON OUR REGULAR DEFENSE AND LEARN A NEW ONE THIS WEEK. I'VE GOT AN IDEA, LETS PUT EVERYONE IN NEW POSTIONS THAT THEY HAVE NEVER PLAYED AND EXPECT THEM TO BE SUPERSTARS AT THOSE POSITIONS (And to top it off, they couldn't even really practice their new positions because it was too smokey to practice.----- That's pretty much what happened. GREAT JOB COACHS!!! #@*&!%$# Here's a tip for next year for the defensive coach: When the offense is on the field, you should be gathering up your defense on the sideline and COACHING them during the game. That's what real coaches due during a game, THEY COACH!!

  • rwca says:

GG HIGH HAS GOOD PLAYERS GOOD SPEED BUT YOU ONLY USE ONE. PLAYER SEAN YOUNG YOU HAVE TO MUCH TALENT FOR THIS STOP THE MESS AND MAYBE YOU MIGHT WIN YOU HAVE AVERY AND JOSH BUT DONT GET THE BALL TO THEM IF MOVE THE BALL AROUND YOU MIGHT TO THE NEXT LEVEL OPEN UP YOUR MIND. ALSO GET A QB THAT CAN THROW THE BALL.YOU GOT TO BE ABLE TO THROW STOP ACTING LIKE SEAN IS YOUR ONLY PLAYER FOR FOOTBALL IS A TEAM SPORT

  • sickmofo says:

OUTCH I WAS HOPING TO SEE THE GROVE VS WESTMINSTER REMIX....

  • MotoType says:

CONGRATULATIONS, MIGHTY LANCERS FROM NORWALK HIGH SCHOOL!!!!! You guys are a real class act. In the last few years, you have come on STRONG!!! If there ever was a Cinderella team, you are it! GREAT victory over Garden Grove. You have what it takes and momentum is with you. ALL THE WAY, NHS!!!!

  • PMaK says:

We held sean young to 7 yards on 13 carries..wow

  • PMaK says:

    Rigorokuz

why complain?? its not up to the us what division were in..

  • Rigorokuz says:

Yeah..but it was a clear mistake to place the suburban league here in div 9...I went to the artesia game and they were playing the number 1 seeded team laguna..let me tell you it was one juggled miss catch the diffrence from artesia winnning as well...The artesia coach gave the game away by kicking short on punts and kickoffs...the suburban league just does not belong here i my eyes ..its up to the rest of the div 9 teams to prove me wrong..but I see a clear path for mayfair to win it all....title game prediction Norwalk vs. Mayfair...

  • Empire fan says:

It's not that the Suburban league does not belong in this division it's that the Garden Grove League should be in a lower division, you all complained about the Empire league being in your division the last couple of years so they moved them brought in the Suburban league and now you're whining about that, your league is weak and can't compete with most of the leages in the county, so how far should we look to find teams you can compete with? Same goes for the Golden West league which is why you're in the same division, don't complain about the divisions just get better and show up ready to play whoever is on your schedule, and use your non league games to get better not just to get easy wins over lesser talented teams, don't complain when you lose congratulate the other team wish them well and start preparing for next year!!
