Selections made by Carlos Arias and Damian Calhoun of OCVarsity.com:
1. Trinity (Orange Lutheran, Mater Dei, Servite, St. John Bosco, Santa Margarita and JSerra's combined record: 37-23): The Boss Hogg/Notorious B.I.G. of O.C. football. Complain about it as much as you want, but the
Trinity teams play the toughest nonleague schedule, they have to slug it out with each other and then they have to play in the Pac-5 in the playoffs.
2. Sunset (Los Al, Edison, Esperanza, Fountain Valley, Newport Harbor and Marina's combined record: 38-22): Esperanza set off the nuke by beating Edison in the regular-season finale, thus bringing about the dreaded five-way tie for first place -- known as the “Sunset Doomsday Scenario.” That showed just how tough and deep this league was this year. I mean, 7-3 teams such as Edison and Newport Harbor aren't even in the Pac-5 playoffs.
3. South Coast (Tesoro, Mission Viejo, San Clemente, Dana Hills, Capo Valley and Aliso Niguel's combined record: 35-25): Throw out Capo Valley and Aliso Niguel and you have four teams – Tesoro, Mission Viejo, San Clemente and Dana Hills - capable of competing with anybody in the county.
4. Century (Canyon, Tustin, El Dorado, Villa Park, El Modena and Brea Olinda's combined record: 24-36): Canyon, Tustin and El Dorado are capable of making deep runs in the Southwest Division playoffs and winning a championship. The records for El Mo and Brea bring the league's overall record down.
5. Empire (Cypress, Valencia, Pacifica, Kennedy, Loara and Katella's combined record: 30-30): The Century League just barely edged out Empire in our eyes. We believe Cypress is the lone legit championship contender from the Empire, but that's why they play the games. Prove us wrong.
Let us know in the comments field below how you feel about these leagues and some of the others in the county.
