CIF Football Playoff Capsules: Northeast Division

November 19th, 2008, 4:50 pm · Post a Comment · posted by DAN ALBANO, ocvarsity.com

MOJAVE (5-5) VS. SADDLEBACK VALLEY CHRISTIAN (10-0)

Site, time:
JSerra High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: The top-seeded Warriors enter the postseason undefeated for the second consecutive season. In 2007, they lost in the Northeast semifinals to Brentwood, 35-7. The Northeast now has a new look without St. Margaret's and Brentwood, but so does SVC. The Warriors are running the intriguing A-11 offense that combines elements of the spread, West Coast and run-and-shoot offenses. SVC averages 32.5 points per game.

The Warriors have two speed burners in William Hinn and Josh Squirrell. Hinn has rushed for 863 yards and eight TDs and Squirrell has 442 yards. Squirrell also has 18 sacks. Mojave plays a freelance schedule and is not part of a league. SVC has defeated two teams currently with winning records – Bell-Jeff and Fairmont Prep.

BELL-JEFF (7-3) VS. FAIRMONT PREP (8-2)

Site, time: Valley Christian of Cerritos, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: The Huskies are in the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season and are seeking their first victory. Friday also marks the first postseason game they have hosted. Fairmont is led by the versatile Richard Johnson (1,406 yards, 28 TDs), who last week against Ribet (0-10) tied Los Amigos' Andrew Niumata's 1998 county record for most touchdowns in a game with eight. Johnson rushed for all eight and also had three two-point conversions to set the county records for most rushing touchdowns and points in a game with 54.

While Johnson's game was a highlight, Fairmont also has felt the wrath of the area fires. The Yorba Linda home of leading tackler Bo Jocson (143 total tackles) and his brother, cornerback/wide receiver David Jocson, was destroyed, Fairmont Prep coach Bobby Mendoza said. Bell-Jeff finished second to St. Genevieve in the Santa Fe League. The Guards opened the season with a 6-0 loss against top-seeded Saddleback Valley Christian. Fairmont lost to SVC, 14-7.
