Here is the Furious Five list of the top two-way players.
List compiled by OCVarsity’s Carlos Arias and Damian Calhoun.
1. Preston King (Tesoro): Are you down with the King? Well, you should be. Preston King leads the county in interceptions (six) and has scored a total of 13 touchdowns.
2. Alex Mascarenas (Mission Viejo): Whether it is offense or defense, it doesn’t make a difference because Mascarenas (UCLA) is making plays all night long.
3. Ruben Ortega (Western): He’s an equal opportunity pain distributor. He’s just as likely to wear you down on offense as he is on defense.
4. Joshua Quezada (La Habra): Runs with a purpose on offense and has a purpose to smack you on defense.
5. Aaron Garbutt (Westminster): He’s rushed for 17 touchdowns, has one receiving touchdown, threw a touchdown pass, returned a kickoff and an interception for touchdowns … What else do you want?

It might be a slight oversight, but where is Western’s Ruben Ortega on this list?
actually Brett Gudim for Tesoro is leading with 7 interceptions and has 12 touchdowns.
@ Missing Links … he’s #3 on the list.
I didn’t want to have to point that out, but thanks Country.
if I’m a college recruiter, #5 is the first guy I take
I have seen a lot of high school football this year and one kid that stands out to me is that Maldanado kid from Mater dei. On defence he is a punisher, and on offence he is a threat as a wide out, but he is also a great down field blocker. This kids skills are rare.I like to see what he is going to do at the next level.
Good call on Maldonado. The kid is tough and a force on special teams. I sure he has to lead the county in blocked FG/PATs
I just saw Maldonado again last week and he is very good, but I don’t know who we would KO from those five on the list.
I only saw him once, but Jeff Crissman was in on seemingly every play- offense, defense, and special teams- against Mater Dei
Hard to believe there is a better all-around player in the county than Garbutt. Nobody kicks off to the guy (60+ yards per return last year), very tough on defense, 10+ yards a carry and an excellent receiver. Check out his YouTube video from his junior year.
King over Mascarenas? Teams refuse to throw to Mascarenas side and when they do its picked off. Mascarenas has a fellow D1 receiver on his team and limits his touches. If this list is based on stats, sure put King ahead. Talent wise? Mascarenas is 1 and far above everyone else. Ocvarsity has jumped on the Tesero bandwagon and is riding it pretty far.
I was wondering where you would rank Cecil Whiteside the OLB/WR from Newport. I know he is only a JR but he was the best defensive player in the Sunset from week to week and he is clearly a real threat at WR. I have no idea what his numbers were but he was the best player on the field in the games I saw.
Great point advisor! How about Robert Cruz? Defense he play’s OLB, and all special team’s. However, team’s don’t punt to him and on kick-off’s they kick away. You know his status on Offense…
I think there are a few defensive and offensive lineman out there that no one is talking about. Just because you don’t score any TD’s or grab any interceptions doesn’t mean you are not important to the team.
Is there a noseguard/offensive lineman that anyone can think of that could be on this list? I like this kid over at Tustin High named Chris Robinson, plays defensive end and is a blocking tight end.
Aaron garbut is by far the best all around player in orange county…its always exciting to watch this kid play!!FYi…i heard this kid played with a broken hand for 3qtrs in there cif game vs irvine..this kid is the definition of a true WARRIOR…Whatever college picks him up will be very lucky to have him..hes going to go 100% day in and day out!!
You have clearly not seen Cecil Whiteside play, you would not make the comment by far the best all around. He is legit 6’3 and 215.
And Whiteside played the last 5 games with a sprained LCL.
this is bull I think Dylan garica or Ryan steadman should be on this list for top two way players. GO FV
