The Furious Five: Best games of the year

November 18th, 2008, 1:36 pm · 13 Comments · posted by CARLOS ARIAS

Here is the Furious Five list of the best games of the year.

List compiled by OCVarsity’s Carlos Arias and Damian Calhoun.

1. Edison-Esperanza, Nov. 14: It wasn’t the best played game of the year, but there wasn’t a result that caused as much chaos as this one. Esperanza’s 16-3 victory over Edison caused a five-way tie for the Sunset League championship and brought about “The Sunset Doomsday Scenario.” We may never see this again …I hope. (Click for the game story.)

2. Orange Lutheran-Mater Dei, Nov. 13: The only thing that stood between Mater Dei and an undefeated Trinity League season was Orange Lutheran and, eventually, kicker Parker Flynn. Flynn’s game-winning 42-yard goal gave the Lancers a 24-21 victory and a share of the Trinity League title. (Click for the game story.)

3. Newport Harbor-Fountain Valley, Oct. 23: A lot of people probably expected the Barons to lose this one. Fountain Valley trailed 21-16 with two minutes remaining. Kyle Middlebrooks capped the victory with a 52-yard touchdown with 38 seconds to go in the game. Next thing you know, the Barons are in the playoffs. (Click here to read the game story.)

4. Los Alamitos-Edison, Oct. 23: Edison took over the No. 1 ranking in the county before this game. The Griffins made sure that the Chargers’ reign on top was short with a 23-19 victory. (Click here to read the game story.)

5. Mission Viejo-Tesoro, Oct. 17: The Titans proved that last year’s victory wasn’t a fluke with their 31-14 victory. They finished the season undefeated and the top-ranked team in the county. (Click here to read the game story.)

  • This is a problem says:

I can see why people get mad at OCVarsity for talking about the same teams over and over again… Trininty League, South Coast League and Sunset League. You do know there are 10 other Leagues in the county right?

  • POPS says:

I guess all the writers were on vacation last Friday night - though I tend to agree…with the last entry - unless you play in those leagues, forget about recognition. Santiago-Los Amigos (Double OT), both played hard and both have earned co-league championship.

  • beachbum says:

IMPOSSIBLE not to include the LosAl - Newport Harbor game of November 13th. 4 lead changes, almost 800 yds total offense, NH never has to punt, Harbor kicks FG on third down with 13 seconds left to come from behind to win by one… Terrific game!

Even though the FV/NH game above was exciting the LosAl game topped it…

  • OC GRIDIRON FAN says:

San Clemente vs. La Habra,,,,exciting,,,could’ve gone either way.

  • sclfan285 says:

You have to throw at least one of San Clemente’s games up there:

San Clemente vs. La Habra - 28-21 - David Espino for the Tritons scored with 6:30 left in the 4th to take the lead, La Habra drove down the field, on 4 and 10 with a minute left in the game and in scoring positing La Habra threw the ball into the end zone for the tie when a San Clemente defender swatted the ball down to seal the game.

San Clemente vs. Dana Hills - 41-31 - There were 3 touchdowns in the final 28 seconds of the half. It was a high scoring game and a lot of great offensive plays, though it was a huge defensive play for the Tritons which helped them to win the game. With 2:32 left in regulation Aaron Jones punted the ball onto the Dolphins 1 yard line. The next play Brett Giesen ran the ball up the middle. Jack Anderson read the play and jammed the middle forcing Giesen to fumble in the endzone. Alex Kahn recovered the fumble for a touchdown making the score 38-31 Tritons. Aaron Jones then capped of the game with a 41 yard field goal. The Tritons quarterback Duke DeLancellotti pilled up 443 total offensive yards.

Tesoro vs. San Clemente - 28 -23 - At Halftime Tesoro was leading 21-10. San Clemente rallied back to 28-23, with a minute left in the 4th quarter San Clemente was driving down the field needing a touchdown to win. On the 30 yard line and about to score the Tritons passed on 3 and 2 put in fell incomplete as DeLancellotti was hit as he passed. On 4th and 2 San Clemente handed the ball off to David Espino up the middle. Tersoro linebacker Scott Graves plugged up the middle and drove Espino for a 2 yard loss to sustain the lead and the win.

Mission Viejo vs. San Clemente - 42 - 37 - The Tritons were down 35 -10 as late as the 3rd quarter. In the 4th quarter the Tritons came fired up scoring on several occasion including an incredible catch by Graham Tenney out jumping 2 defenders in the end zone to make the score 42-37. With 7 seconds left in the game the Tritons drove the ball to the 15 yard line and were in position to score. On 4th down DeLancellotti rolled out looking for running back David Espino. The ball was throw behind his reciever and picked off by Jake Staszak to end the game.

The Tritons have played some great games this year and many of them have been come from behind games. There is no quit in this Triton squad. Watch out for them in the playoffs.

  • LOARAPOPS says:

yeah i agree there pretty wack

  • CARLOS ARIAS says:

sclfan285: The MV-SC game was awesome. That probably should have made the list.

  • Empire fan says:

Got to agree with the majority here you Register writers have blown it again, by failing to recognize even one game played by a non Trinity-Sunset-South Coast League team, i mean seriously get with it people there are several other oustanding leagues and teams in this county so please remove your heads from your backsides and pay attention to them they work just as hard as the big three and deserve a little recognition for it!!

  • I think the beautiful thing with this technology is getting to share.

I’m not disagreeing with you Empire Fan: maybe there should be some Empire games on there.

I would like to hear which ones you think are deserving.

  • ImDaBizz says:

I have to agree with POPS, Santiago - Los was undoubtedly the best game in the GGL all year and top 5 worthy for the rest of the county. How many other games went into 2OT?

  • Damian Calhoun, OCVarsity.com since 2004 says:

Mater Dei-Carson went four OTs and probably should have made the list

  • jason21 says:

    Santa Ana vs. Segerstrom 35-34

  • jason21 says:

Saints were down by 2 TDs blocked an extra point. and came back to win.
