Girls tennis: Troy eliminates Northwood from playoffs

November 18th, 2008, 5:18 pm · Post a Comment · posted by Chris Tobolski, OCVarsity.com

The Warriors and Timberwolves were set to meet Saturday, and again Monday,  but the fires forced the match to be played Tuesday.

Troy received sweeps at No. 1 and 2 singles and No. 1 doubles for an 11-7 victory over Northwood in Round 2 play of the CIF-SS Division I playoffs at Troy High.

Troy faces top-seeded Corona del Mar in the quarterfinals Wednesday at CdM High. Match is scheduled for 2 p.m. but is likely to start closer to 1:45 pm.

"We thought beforehand it would be a close match," Warriors coach Donna Judd said. "It happened like we thought it would. Our big guns carried us and we squeezed out a couple more sets."

On playing the Sea Queens, Judd said, "It's like I told the girls, let's go play some good tennis. There's no pressure on us. We've done well this year. I'm pleased."

Northwood defeated Brentwood, 10-8, last Thursday. The Timberwolves and Warriors didn't meet during the regular season.

"It was a close match," Northwood coach Eric Keith said. "It was a lot closer than I thought it would be. Troy has a good team. I think it came down to their top singles players."

Other scores:

Dana Hills 15, Laguna Beach 3: No. 2 seed Dolphins advanced to the semifinals by defeating the Breakers. Dana Hills received sweeps from No. 1 singles player Brynn Boren and No. 1 doubles team of Leyla Simmons and Victoria Wing.

Dolphins likely will face No. 3 Palos Verdes on Thursday. Dana Hills beat Palos Verdes in the semifinals last season on its way to the championship.
