Fryer's picks: Pac-5 championship and analysis

November 18th, 2008, 4:17 pm · 20 Comments · posted by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

Here's Steve Fryer's Pac-5 championship pick and analysis of the division:

Final: Long Beach Poly over Notre Dame.

Analysis: I went back-and-forth and second guessed myself on a lot of selections in this division – especially the pick of Notre Dame over Orange Lutheran because Lutheran could win this division. Mater Dei, Mission Viejo, Servite and Tesoro also have what it takes to take the title. But Long Beach Poly likely is the best team in this ultra-competitive group.

    Steve-O,

Once again your crystal ball -seems to be a little foggy.
Mission Viejo over Mater Dei. Matt Barkley, can't do it all. Plus the Diablos have only one Loss-that was to Tesor.

  • MDFAN says:

Deefend must not have been at the MD games. DEFENSE played a big part in many wins. Matt Barkley is a GREAT player - but no football player can win a game on his own! Give Kudos to the other players who put it out there week after week and get no glory. GO MONARCHS!

  • Deefend says:

    MD Fan,

Mater Dei had three games on FSN. I am not to sure , if you knew that ?MD-fan. I know this because I watched all three ! SO yes i did get a chance to see Mater Dei

MD and MV in the finals? I can't see either one getting past the semi's, and I've have some doubt about both getting past the second round. MV hasn't played a defense like Servite all year, and Picazo could really light up the MD d-backfield.

  • Brett S says:

I agree with KO. The SCL teams need to EARN their props by actually winning a playoff game. In two years they have one exactly once and they were 0-fer last year.

Personally, I think that Tesoro is in prime upset position. Their non-league schedule was soft and I believe that the SCL is overrated - but that's why they play the games!

  • tondizzle85 says:

Correction Deefend, I know it is not a a big deal, but two games were on FSN (Corona Centennial & Olu) and one on ESPN2 against LA Carson. MD is not the full package, but they are extremely competitive, have great coaches, and work hard. My point is that you cannot count out the Monarchs. I have seen them progress and they are playing well together, not just one person. They lost to three well coached teams with excellent athletes. In a way the Monarchs are clicking even more than last year and I have faith that they will make one hell of run, if not make it to that championship game. If they lose it will because their opponent worked hard for it and not because MD rolled over and gave up. Rollo has been here before and he will fire up the Monarchs. New season men...show everyone what you can do. Go Monarchs!

who cares if they were on fsn espn or fox11 WHO CARES!! spotlight doesnt mean anything!! LB Poly never had one game this year on national television! and they are 10-0 a better record than MD. MD is well known, and can afford these things, not like long beach..

Ok all you homers, the Trinity League is head and shoulders better that any other league in Orange County, period. Why, because every every school in that league schedules the toughest non-league schedule they possibly can. Why, so when they get to league play, they'll be tournament tested. Tesoro is the best team in the South Coast league, but their non-league schedule was very soft. Yes, their big up front, but San Clemente had a much smaller line and still got to the QB several times. Mission Viejo's non-league schedule was soft as well. In fact, the Sunset league top to bottom is much better in my opinion. Ponder this, the top 3 SCL teams wouldn't beat the 4th place team from the Trinity league, St. John Boscoe. Keith Price is possibly the best QB in all of Southern California. Way better than Barkley and I like Barkley. He's just no Keith Price. The only reason Servite beat them was because they won the turn over battle. Price made several "Sports Center" highlight plays that night. He was incredible. But, credit to Servite for forcing those turn overs. Each others defense really couldn't stop the opposing offense. Boscoe had several penaltys at key times that hurt as well. But again, their non-league schedule was amazing. It got them ready for the gauntlet of teams they would face in the Trinity. Don't be surprised when all SCL and Sunset league teams are done after 2 rounds.

  • Blog says:

We should have the Trinity League CIF Campionship, and let the public schools play for the real CIF Campionship.

  • gregg says:

the bad news for sunset south coast and trinity fans is they would most likely be beaten by the total speed and game of centennial.

  • N0hmadd says:

LB. Poly Grad from the class of 1977,

I would love to see Poly win and go to the State Championship game...However, as good as The Jackrabbits Defence is, there offence is pretty one-Dimensional and more then likely will not be enough to bring Poly back in the closing Minutes of a game if they fall behind.

Poly Fan for life, but I am also Grounded in Reality :)

  • tondizzle85 says:

"MD is well known, and can afford these things, not like long beach." LBP sends more kids to the NFL than any other high school in California, maybe in the nation. They are plenty famous and I am sure have a lot of money invested in their football program. Don't give me that junk that Poly can't afford TV time. I'm sure Snoop Dog donates some cash and gains them some exposure, especially since his boy plays for them. I also doubt that a school has to pay for TV time on FSN. The games that featured MD were all good games against quality opponents. Why were they on TV? because the more viewers = more money. Poly is the wolf on top of the hill right now and the teams at the bottom are hungrier than they are. I expect to see an OC team in that championship game and win.

  • N0hmadd says:

In Southern California, Mater Dei is to High school sports what Notre Dame is to college footall, ND could be 0-10 in football yet they will be on 2-3 national Tv broadcast a week.

Dont get Me wrong, MD has a great Program in all sports and people take pride in the accomplishments that the Kids put fourth on the field and in the class room.

Its all about ratings, thats why We are stuck with reality Tv.

    Doh!

  • Jim H says:

Poly's schedule makes them suspect. The only top teams they played were St. Bonaventure and L.B. Jordan and both of those teams gave Poly a game. I don't think Poly has the lock on making the finals everyone thinks they do. Also talking about Poly not being able to afford things. Have you taken a look at their web site? Very impressive.
It makes M.D. look like a poor relative.

  • tondizzle85 says:

"We should have the Trinity League CIF Campionship, and let the public schools play for the real CIF Campionship."

    Blog,

Come on man! Every team wants to play the best competition possible. A team gets better by playing quality opponents. This is the purpose of the PAC 5 division, to be a real champion, and to play/beat the best.

  • All About Serivte says:

Trinity League is by far the toughest leagues in the State and Even the Country I think That Servit, olu, md, and bosco could take all the other schools Servite is going to put up a huge fight dont be surprised if they end up in the finals

  • jackrabbit says:

Re: Poly's sch. Year in and year out Poly plays the best teams they can schedule. Miami Northwestern was the reigning national champs from last yr. brot a 49*0 record that Poly snapped. St. Bonaventure is rated in the top 5 by the LA Times. Poly has played Concord DLS, Mission Viejo, they have travelled to Hawaii, Wash. state, Nevada , etc. looking for the best. Steel makes Steel my brothas. L.B Poly has sent more players to the NFL then any high school in the entire USA. Have won more CIF titles than any school in California. Certain teams have a pedigree while others are still trying to make a name for themselves . Bishop Amat: Poly will run the ball, play hellacious D and awe you with their team speed.

  • goodwin, class of 84 says:

Who cares!!! Oaks Christian would beat any of these teams anyways.

  • Jami says:

    Guess you were quite WRONG!!
Arleta is #1 and will always be. Everyone isn't giving them the credit they deserve.... How many schools can say after being open for 3 years, this being the 2nd year having a varisty team that they would go all the way and be undefeated while doing it.. To all the haters... MUSTANGS are the CHAMPS!!!!!!!
