Espy… If you did see the NH-Espy game, you must be living in a dream world if you saw anything but a blowout. Harbor played everyone on their team that night.

For you to blame the punter for bad field position TOTALLY misses the point… Besides, Espy’s defense was supposed to be their strong point!

The system for chosing league reps in ties totally is out of line… Read the article written about it on cal-hi sports. In their scenerio, NH would have been the #1 rep

And, in case you’re wondering, no.. I do not have a boy, relative, or friend associated with NHHS football… I’m just an old Permian grad who likes HS football and think playoffs and champions should be determined by who wins and not by political and historical reputations.

It is true that Newport SHOULD have beaten FV, BUT they didn’t and it cost them and FV deserves to be right where they are… With NH four turnovers, LosAl SHOULD have beaten NH, but they didn’t and LA is only in the playoffs because their white-out bottle was picked… DITTO Espy…

Hopefully, CIF will recognize the problem and correct it for future years.

It’s more than a little shocking to see LosAl ranked above FV and Newport Harbor since BOTH beat LosAl.

Newport beat LosAl like a drum with over 450 yds total offense, which was 200 yards more than LosAl could muster and even with NH having FOUR turnovers managed to lose.

Come on guys… just because of the luck of the draw and Edison taking Espy for granted because Newport beat Espy 35-6, LosAl could/should be sitting at home or, at best, the Pac-5 at-large team.

At the least, FV deserves to be #7 or #8 and NH deserves to be #8 or #9 and LosAl, at best, deserves to be #10!

I can’t believe that they didn’t have a better system than picking random from a bowl. I’m naturally disappointed that Edison didn’t make it but more disappointed that it was based on a random selection than based on something like POINTS or something rational. I think you could have argued that all 5 of the teams deserved to be there because they each beat someone who’s going. I just still can’t believe there isn’t a more logical way to select. Perhaps the league will set up a set of rules to make it logical next year if this happens again?

Los AL #6 ? is to high especially when you have both teams that beat them behind them? If they hadn’t played it would be different but they did and if you can’t figure out who’s better even after they played head to head then i don’t know what else to say to you?

Too bad you didn’t watch the Espy-NH game and watch Espy go down on their first possession and score on the first string D. After after that Espy was missing their punter and NH was able to capitalize on a short field all night. Espy was not the better team that night but not weak. Lets not for get they beat Edison and FV while NH didn’t. The argument can go many ways in the sunset. Fact NH didn’t take care of business against FV and it cost them.

I cant believe there has been no articles written about the ridiculous system used to determine the fate of the the Sunset league playoff reps.

Newport Harbor is the only team in that league that has played well the past three weeks; waxing a weak Esperanza team 35-6 (the 6 pts were scored in 4th quarter on Harbors 3rd team D), crushing Marina (who esperanza beat by 3), and beating Los Al @ Los Al by overcoming a -3 turnover margin and putting together a game winning drive. Newport didn’t punt the entire game by the way.

This was a unique situation with the 5 way tie for first place, so a unique solution should have been implemented. At least let all 5 teams get a chance at applying for the at large bid. If the committee truely believes that esperanza was the best team in the league and Harbor was 5th, then disregard this rant.

It’s a shame that the team playing the best football at the end of the season doesn’t even get a chance to represent the league. Isn’t that why we have a playoff system in HS? Is this the BCS? No wait, if this were the BCS then Harbor would have at the very least been the 3 seed in the Sunset.

I predict that all Sunset teams get beat convincingly in the first round, not because the league is weak, but because Harbor is the only team playing good football at this point in the season.

The only teams that deserved to be left out were Edison and Los Al. They were the only team that had a chance to control their own playoff fate and blew in front of their home crowds. Esperanza and Foutain valley will be wishing that they DIDN’T get randomly selected to the playoffs when they’re getting blown out by their first round opponents.

Well FV was winning in the 4th quarter against both Espy and Edision and lost both games. Then they are losing in the 4th quarter against Los Al and NH and win both games. Crazy is right. It seems like all of them had their chance to take control of league at one point or another. Going into the last week though only Edison could have done that and they didn’t. I feel bad for NH, they sucked it up and beat Los Al and they are out and Los Al is in. Wacky finish to a great regular season in the Sunset league.
