The Furious Five: Top Quarterbacks

Selections made by Carlos Arias and Damian Calhoun of OCVarsity.com:

1. Robbie Picazo (Tesoro): If you need to win a game, Picazo is your guy. He doesn't make mistakes. He makes plays.

2. Sean Schroeder (Dana Hills): Duke got a steal with this kid. Schroeder has a great arm and a fearless style. He put up numbers against all of the top teams he faced.

3. Allan Bridgford (Mission Viejo): This Cal-bound gunslinger has thrown for a county-high 35 TDs this season.

4. Matt Barkley (Mater Dei): The USC-bound Barkley hasn't had the same kind of season he had as a junior when he was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year, but he is on pace to become the county's career passing leader.

5. Clark Evans (Los Alamitos): This Colorado-bound QB is a double threat. He can throw the long ball and he can scramble for yards on the ground. He's easily the most mobile QB in the county.

Let us know in the comments field below who you think is the top QB in the county this season.

  • Empire fan says:

Good list, i would put it 1. Bridgford 2.Picazo 3.Evans 4. Schroeder 5. Barkley .this is just based on this years performance and not total career

  • sclfan385 says:

    6. Duke DeLancellotti - Came out of nowhere this season with an underrated Tritons squad behind him. He has been a dominant player in the South Coast League this year and he is also dual threat with his outstanding running ability. Will be a key player in the next upcoming weeks in the playoffs.

  • THS Fan says:

El Dorado's Kayne Wilson, don't know how this kid is not on any one's recruiting charts. This kid is accuarate and can scramble, plus he is tall and can easily see over the offensive line. Who ever picks up this kid will be getting a great steal. Might be the most underrated QB in the county, not saying he is better than the other kids on the list just saying I don't understand why he is flying under the radar. I think he is the reigning Century League Offensive PLOY as well.

  • sloppy cheese says:

El Dorado's Kane Wilson HAS to be on here.

  • DanaFB says:

Good list! I also think Duke DeLancelotti needs to be up there. He threw 330+ against us, and I think Mission as well. He reminds me of a Fran Tarkington type of QB.

  • SCL says:

It's great to see Picazo get the props he deserves. The final judgement of a QB does have to come down to getting the 'W'. Picazo's gone 10-0 in the South Coast League over the last two years with maybe 2 interceptions in SCL play. Those are all great QB's on the list with Wilson and DeLancelotti also deserving to be mentioned.

  • sclchamps says:

And why is Picazo the only one without a full ride offer????

  • Damian Calhoun, OCVarsity.com since 2004 says:

Wilson and DeLancellotti are tough guys, maybe they should be on our upcoming "Tough Guys" team.

  • 1Charger1 says:

I would say the best Junior this year was Edison's Matt Viles. Had very little experience as a sophmore and really worked hard to win the job over the summer where there was quite a QB competition going on. Has proven himself to be an accurate passer while being one of the toughest QB's in the county. Followed nicely in Nick Crissman's footsteps and should have even bigger numbers next year as 5 of Edison's top 7 WR's/RB's are coming back.

  • mamagane says:

I agree with 1Charger1. Matt Viles is definitely the one to watch next year. Proud of you, Matt.

  • Chatter says:

From what I've seen Wilson has a rocket arm but not used a whole lot. He runs too much which brings his stock down according to a local scout.

  • Seal Beach Gary says:

Everyone of these young men are outstanding! Their passing stats are xlnt across the board. I think the list is somewhat arbitrary, though! I mostly agree with your #1 and #2 choices. I think putting Allan Bridgford and Matt Barkley ahead of Clark Evans is unsubstantiated by their records and their worth to their respective teams. Evans has a better completion percentage, 60% v. 57% for Barkley. Evans has thrown for 25 TD's v. 20 for Barkley. Evans has had only 7 INT's v. 14 for Barkley. Barkley holds the edge in passing yards at 2502 v. 1994 for Evans, but when you factor in 820 rushing yards and 11 rushing TD's for Evans v, 20 yards rushing and 0 TD's for Barkley the edge is apparent.

I would pick Evans over Bridgford ,again, because of of Evan's mobility and his ability to get 1st downs with his legs when necessary. Bridgford has -13 yards rushing this season with 0 TD's.

Lastly, I think that Mater Dei and Mission Viejo have better athletes, in general, than Los Alamitos. Clark Evans' contribution to the Griffins success this past season cannot be underestimated. If I were a Div, I head coach looking to the future and the "spread" offenses so prevalent in college football these days I'd go after Clark Evans in a heartbeat.

  • sickmofo says:

WHERE IS O-LINE OR D-LINE I KNOW THERE ARE A FEW GREAT ONES THAT DO THE REAL WORK TO MAKE THEM GUYS LOOK GOOD

  • playswithheart says:

delancellotti out threw picazzo in the tesoro game, bridgeford in the mission game, and shroeder in the dana game. probably deserves to be up there, slow start in the beginning of the year but has really steped it up

  • USC #1 says:

Outstanding that Picazo is getting his just due. Excellent reads of the defense, solid arm with an nice touch, and make very few mistakes out there. A thinking mans QB--very efficient. All the others have stronger arms and solid stats, but none of the others went undefeated.

  • THHSFAN says:

OK lets look at this discussion based on QB ratings used by Maxpreps:
    1. Sean Schroeder - Dana Hills - 142.31
    2. Robbie Picazo - Tesoro - 132.19
    3. Allan Bridgford - Mission Viejo - 122.27
    4. Clark Evans - Los Alamitos - 113.11
    5. Jason Mayer - Trabuco Hills - 110.27
    6. Zack Griffith - Foothill - 106.18
    7. Kane Wilson - El Dorado - 99.29
    8. Matt Viles - Edison - 95.06
    9. Matt Barkley - Mater Dei - 90.56
    10. Duke Delancellotti - San Clemente - 87.75

Does anyone have some other QB's they want me to rate? I have this setup on an excel spreadsheet. Just thought I'd add some clarity to the discussion.

  • doublede says:

    THHSFAN....

Do me a favor with that excel spreadsheet.....do the three games that counted. SC, Dana, MV, Tesoro! I think the numbers will be very interesting. Let's also make sure your looking at QB's with at least 200 throws I'm pretty sure this list gets thined pretty quick!
I'm assuming your a Tesoro fan and no slight on the other fiine QB's listed....but four or five would be out by not having a min of 200 throws....

  • 200 pass attempts definitely is the legitimate criteria for rating any passer in the county, in my opinion.

  • THHSFAN says:

Ok only 2 players Kane Wilson ( 180 passes in 9 Games) and Jason Mayer (172 passes in 7 1/2 games) are below the magic number of "200". I will recalculate after game 1 of the playoff when both should have reached that number. Now do you want me to throw out their high and low games as well? Accept it for what its worth. This is the current "Gold Standard" unless you come up with a better methodology. Note: Jason Mayer came back and played weeks 4, 5, and 6 with a cast on his non-throwing arm. So do you think he deserves to be here? Clearly he does.

  • Wrong says:

you really think Trabuco will throw 28 times?

  • doublede says:

    THHSFAN...

I agree with you, please remember the QB from SCHS was not on the field in the second half in four of the ten games because of the score at halftime. Coach Patton would never allow his team to run up the score or stats! Also the QB from SC had a horrible hip pointer in the Tesoro and MV game...just pointing out that the numbers are deceiving and yes Jason Mayer is a stud and should be included. If you watched the THHS vs SC game you know the sc qb did not play in the second half!
    Good Luck in the play-offs!

  • That's close enough for Wilson and Mayer.

  • Greendog says:

THHSFAN take a look at Andrew Macdonald from Newport. I am curious how Paul Macdonald's kid stacks up on that ranking system?

  • THHSFAN says:

Wrong : He might throw 28 times if we have good time of posession. He threw over 33 times for 258 yards an 1 TD versus Foothill but who knows. We have a pretty balanced offense so if we are running well..agian who knows.

doublede: Yes I saw DD first hand he is a quality QB for sure and looks to be a great leader on the field. Yes your coach did take him out as there was nothing left to prove and you don't want your quaterback getting hurt in a game like that. Now if he played for Mission Bob would have him in there to pad his stats.. Did I say that out loud.....Did you know that Mark Sanchez should have gone to THHS? But thats a story for another time...

Greendog: Andrew MaDonald of NH comes in at 96.14

You gotta love this time of year!111

  • doublede says:

THHSFAN...Thanks for the Props, you guys take of business tonight! I Love the tradition at Newport Harbor and McDonald is a fine QB. Went to High school with his mother. Don't get me started on Sponge Bob...what he did in the Capo game says all you need to know about him. At least Mark Sanchez was within the area code, his qb takes the toll road to school!

  • SCL observer says:

I am sure most will agree that Picazo had the benefit of the best offensive line in the South Coast League. It makes things much easier when you are not under duress. However, he still produced and you can't take that away from him. In regards to the other three, looking at their stats against the OC's top ranked Tesoro, here are the numbers:
    1) Schroeder, 26 of 37, 346 yards, 3 tds, 2 ints
    2) Delancellotti, 21 of 36, 252 yards, 1 td, 3 ints
    3) Bridgford, 8 of 26, 181 yards, 2 tds, 4 ints

  • doublede says:

Of the three only delancelloti was in it at the end with a chance to win the game, first team to score on tesoro in the first quarter, most points scored till the Dana game and had a legit chance to win the game. had the ball on tesoros 13 yard line with a minute to go....also had a winning touchdown called back on a kick-off return. No knock on the other two QB's but SC had them right on the ropes...

    Good Luck in the play-offs!

  • CLAN Parent says:

SCHS is a very sound team. Rooting for them in the Pac-5.

  • doublede says:

As I stated earlier I would not want to play that La Habra team again...Good Luck in the Play-offs! Only I don't think you'll need lt!

  • Tritons Win says:

    Clan,

Thanks for the kind words and best of luck to you in the playoffs as well... That Hillman kid is amazing

Any good places to eat off the 91???

  • CLAN Parent says:

Fuddruckers off the 91 FWY @ Beach Blvd., just north of the freeway. East side of beach.

  • Clan Parent says:

Has anyone seen Clark Evans and Kane WIlson play? If so, how would they compare? I understand they play a different level of competition.

  • SCL Observer says:

Clark Evans numbers against Tesoro last night:
15 of 34, 229 yards, 0 tds, 3 ints and very little rushing yards

  • Empire fan says:

Clan Parent : I have seen both Evans and Wilson play and they compare favorily, Evans is a bit more polished at this point but both are very good, Evans is a bit faster and has a little bit stronger arm and looks to be more solid than Wilson, Wilson is a great scrambler has a good arm and makes good decisions, both seem to be very good leaders, it's suprising to me that Wilson hasn't gotten more looks by the D-1 colleges as he can play at that level and certainly has the genes in him to prove it.

  • Tom O says:

Alot of great discussion, analysis, Sponge Bob hating, etc. Always fun to debate HS QB's. Several of these guys will play Saturdays regularly in a few years i'm sure, but having seen 6 of the guys on THHSFANs magical spreadsheet, I think the guy who best has a chance to play on Sundays is Evans. I say that because if some college coach asks nicely and has a logical reason (like playing time) the guy could play develop into a TE, WR, LB, Safety. He is big, athletic, fast enough and plays very much under control. None of these other guys could make such a transition. The guy was a 3 year stud on a finesse team with no line and a whisper of a running game. Sure, he has wide-outs but imagine Barley or Bridgeford playing behind Los Als O-line and having to scramble 15 times a game. Oh, the horror! Just my opinion.
