The Furious Five: Best Single-Game Performances
List compiled by Carlos Arias and Damian Calhoun of OCVarsity.com:
1. Magnolia RB Robert Cruz: vs. Katella (Sept. 12) … or vs. Estancia (Sept. 26) … or vs. Savanna (Oct. 24) … or vs. Santa Ana Valley (Oct. 31) … or vs. Century (Nov. 7): Take your pick. Cruz had at least 300 rushing yards and at least five TDs in every one of those games.
2. Fountain Valley RB Kyle Middlebrooks: vs. Newport Harbor, Oct. 23: This was the game that turned the Barons from Sunset League stepchild to Sunset League championship contender. Middlebrooks rushed for 221 yards on 21 carries, including a 52-yard TD run with 38 seconds left to give the Barons a 22-21 victory over the Sailors.
3. Servite RB Greg Portis: vs. Edison, Sept. 26: In this high-profile matchup of top-five teams, Portis scored on runs of 44 and 28 yards and scored on a 94-yard kick return to lead the Friars to a 29-17 victory over Edison.
4. Mater Dei RB Jaron Hytche: vs. Servite, Oct. 17: Hytche rushed for 202 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries as the Monarchs beat Servite, 42-21, in this Trinity League game. Hytche’s performance helped the Monarchs up their unbeaten streak to 20 consecutive games against the Friars.
5. Fairmont Prep RB Richard Johnson and St. Margaret’s RB John Murayama: Johnson rushed for 290 yards and scored eight TDs in Fairmont Prep’s 67-0 victory over Ribet Academy on Nov. 14, and Murayama scored seven rushing TDs in the Tartans’ 70-6 victory over Brethren Christian on Oct. 30.
Let us know in the comments field below who you think had the best single-game performance in the county this season.

While i agree rushing for over 300 yards in a game is a great accomplishment you must take into consideration who he did it against and weigh that gainst what Middlebrooks, Portis, and Hytche did against much better compitition, and if you do that i think all of there games were greater individual accomplishments then getting 300 against lesser talented teams, Middlebrooks,Portis and Hytche would run for 400-500 yards against any of those teams he had 300 against, not trying to take anything away from Cruz because what he accomplished was great but just trying to keep it in perspective guys.
I had the the pleasure of having Cruz and Portis, in my back field and also Hytche All Conference game. There all fast, tough Kids!!
Cruz would still put up GREAT number’s in any other league. There is absolutely no offensive weapon’s around him QB/TE/WR/FB or slot guy. Also line play up front, size, blocking and coaching favor’s Sunset and Trinity league’s.
I would have loved to see Cruz play with some weapon’s around him. That would make it tough to game plan.
Cruz had an amazing year but you gotta give it up for Magnolias line. They should get some attention.
put cruz in a los al uniform with clark evans and a solid line and they are simply the number one team in the county … im not taking anything away from tesoro … but wow … i could only imagine! cruz is what portis and middlebrooks strive to be. cruz is just on the wrong side of the tracks when it comes to power house football.
Woohoo, go Kyle! (:
Not taking anything away from Tesoro’s RB’s, but imagine Kyle Middlebrooks running behind that line. Wow!
Kyle had an amazing year, playing in one of the toughest leagues and putting numbers like that, i mean wow!
u give kyle a line like tesoros, and records will be broken
guarenteed
I would also like to add Duke Delancellotti Qb for San Clemente.
Against Dana he accounted for over 400 yards of offense as he passed for over 330 yards and he rushed for over 80.
He has taken huge strides replacing Curtis but also has to remember his limitations
Honorable Mention to WR Graham Tenney as he had 4 games in a row with over 10 catches and 100 yards min receiving
Yeah, Cruz had some good games, but not against Western
Western does have a good defense but he still put up over 200 yard against them.
Cruz did have 225 yards and 2 TDs on 41 carries against Western. That’s prettty good against a very good Western team that has a shot at a CIF title.
225 yards on 41 carries is not that impressive as i’m sure he broke 2-3 runs of over 40 yards so overall not an overwhelming accomplishment, on 20 carries maybe not 41, and ok i guess technically because they’re in the tounament Western has a chance at a title but realistically they don’t as they choke every year in the playoffs as that silly wing t offense of theres just isn’t designed to win Championships outside of the Orange League
Cruz in a Servite Uniform…that would’ve been great.
Cruz behind Tago and the Tesoro Line (ouch).
Empire Fan, I agree with you 100%.
Congratulation’s to all of the Magnolia Sentinels, on great year!! You have made the whole community proud.
Robert Cruz # 32, Congratulation kid on a historical year! You have worked so hard for this, for many year’s… “I told hard work pay’s-off” Keep your head up you have a lot of football to still a head of you.
Champion’s Train!!
400 All purpose yard’s against a tough& physical Tustin Team.
Way to go Cruz!!
