Eichelberger: How I voted this week

November 17th, 2008, 9:44 pm · · posted by

Here is how I voted this week for the county’s top 10:

1. Tesoro
2. Servite
3. Orange Lutheran

4. Mission Viejo
5. Mater Dei
6. Los Alamitos
7. Edison
8. San Clemente
9. Fountain Valley
10. Newport Harbor

Three observations behind my rankings:

1. It seemed only fitting that the Sunset League ended in a five way tie for first place. All season long, the league has produced some of the most competitive football in the county, with the final week of the season being no different. It seems almost cruel that Edison and Newport Harbor are left on the outside looking in.

2. Last week, a certain OC varsity reporter with the initals JE proclaimed that Orange Lutheran had the opportunity to make quite a statement against Mater Dei. Statement received. The Lancers last second 24-21 win proved that Orange Lutheran has all the characteristics of a team that could be quite a force in the playoffs. It also reinforced the Trinity League trifecta (dub by colleague Steve Fryer). For the third straight year, Mater Dei beats Servite, Servite beats Orange Lutheran, and Orange Lutheran beats Mater Dei.

3. For a team that completed the regular season with a 10-0 record, Tesoro is seemingly still under many people’s radar. However, for those who have not seen the Titans play this season, this team is really good. Quarterback Robbie Picazo is an intelligent quarterback that can make every throw, the running game is solid, and Preston King and Brett Gudim are two of the county’s most talented receivers. If Tesoro can maintain the level of play they displayed throughout the season, the Titans will be incredibly tough beat in the playoffs.

Someone please tell these people that Fountain Valley and Newport Harbor just beat Los Al in consecutive weeks and that’s there’s no better way of telling who’s better than who other than recent head to head meetings and how much more recent could those games have been? Come on people i know Los Al is good but these two teams just beat them give them there do!!

  • beachbum says:

It’s more than a little shocking to see LosAl ranked above FV and Newport Harbor since BOTH beat LosAl.

Newport beat LosAl like a drum with over 450 yds total offense, which was 200 yards more than LosAl could muster and even with NH having FOUR turnovers managed to lose.

Come on guys… just because of the luck of the draw and Edison taking Espy for granted because Newport beat Espy 35-6, LosAl could/should be sitting at home or, at best, the Pac-5 at-large team.

At the least, FV deserves to be #7 or #8 and NH deserves to be #8 or #9 and LosAl, at best, deserves to be #10!

  • Again, NH was clearly playing the best football of all the sunset league teams at the end of the year, what a shame they are not in the play-offs. LOS AL, ESPY, and FV will be one and done on Friday…….
