County outlook: Southern Division
Laguna Hills: The Hawks went undefeated in the regular season for the first time in school history and have been No. 1 in the Southern all season. Laguna Hills has a tough first-round game against Artesia, which finished in a three-way tie for second place in the tough Suburban League. Artesia enters the playoffs as the No. 4 team from the Suburban League after losing coin flips, but it was ranked No. 8 in the final Southern poll. The Hawks were seeded last season and got eventual champion Cypress in the first round and lost to the Centurions, 30-26.
Costa Mesa: The Mustangs lost their first five games before closing out the regular season with a five-game winning streak and capturing the Orange Coast League title. The Orange Coast League is one of the weaker leagues in the county and the Mustangs are matched up with Santiago, which shared the Garden Grove League title with Los Amigos and Garden Grove.
Santiago: The Cavaliers shared the Garden Grove League title with Los Amigos and Garden Grove, but enter the playoffs as a No. 3 team after losing coin flips. The Cavaliers are favored to beat Costa Mesa in the first round, but their playoff run should come to an end in the second round against Laguna Hills.
Garden Grove: The Argos shared the Garden Grove League title with Los Amigos and Santiago and ended up getting the No. 2 spot after the coin flips. Garden Grove should get past Norwalk in the first round, then comes a potential rematch against No. 4 seed Westminster. Garden Grove knocked off Westminster, 42-28, in the season opener.
Westminster: The Lions, who are led by two-way star Aaron Garbutt, closed out the regular season with a six-game winning streak. Westminster got a very tough first-round matchup against Irvine. The Vaqueros finished third in the Pacific Coast League behind No. 1 seed Laguna Hills and No. 2 seed Corona del Mar, but they finished No. 7 in the final Southern poll.
Irvine: Never count out a Terry Henigan-coached team. The Vaqueros’ three losses were by a combined nine points. They battled No. 2 seed CdM in a 14-13 loss and almost knocked off No. 1 seed Laguna Hills in a 20-13 defeat.
Calvary Chapel: The Eagles are in the playoffs for the first time since 2001, but they have a tall order in the first round against No. 3 seed Mayfair, which is riding a six-game winning streak.
Los Amigos: The Lobos shared the Garden Grove League title with Garden Grove and Santiago, and they got the No. 1 spot after the coin flips. Los Amigos get Segerstrom in the first round. The Lobos and Segerstrom have Santa Ana as a common opponent. The Lobos beat Santa Ana, 17-7, while the Jags lost to Santa Ana, 35-34.
Segerstrom: The Jaguars are in the playoffs for the first time and they have a good chance to get a victory in the playoffs in an evenly matched first-round game against Los Amigos. The second round would get a lot trickier against No. 3 seed Mayfair.
Santa Ana: The Saints, the No. 2 team from the Golden West League, will be the favorites in the first round against Laguna Beach, the No. 2 team from the Orange Coast League. But the Saints’ run should come to an end in a potential second-round game against No. 2 seed Corona del Mar.
Laguna Beach: The Breakers had their three-game winning streak snapped by Costa Mesa, 38-30, in the regular-season finale, but they are back in the playoffs as the No. 2 team from the Orange Coast League. Laguna Beach will be the underdog against Santa Ana in the first round.
Corona del Mar: The Sea Kings didn’t get any favors in the first round with their matchup against La Mirada, which finished tied for second place with Artesia and Norwalk in the Suburban League. Still, Corona del Mar should get past La Mirada in the first round and Santa Ana in the second round before a potential showdown against No. 3 Mayfair in the semifinals.

OK Laguna Hills, the CIF is basically giving you this championship by moving the Empire league out of this division so don’t mess it up, your toughest competition will probably be from a team you already beat in CDM. the Suburban league is not that strong this year as you can see that there best team Mayfair lost to a very average Kennedy team this year, get by Artesia and take it one game at a time and i think you will find yourselves sitting on top of this Division at 13-0 can’t get any better than that!
Artesia is best team on Del Amo Blvd., that’s all.
COME ON SANTiAGO WE CAN DO iT!
WE BEAT LAGUNA HiLLZ LAST YEAR AND CAN DO iT AGAiN!
COME ON CAVALiERZ!
When did Santiago beat Laguna Hills last year?
Still not sure how CdM got such an easy draw. They have no 1st place teams in their group of 4, and drew a 4-6 La Mirada team in the first round. They then get the Saints in the second and are a shoe in to reach the semis. Mayfair as the 3rd seed gets the worst team in the division, and a fairly easy second round game as well. The top half of the bracket makes no sense. How does Westminster as the #4 end up with a 7-3 Irvine team? There had to be an easier 3rd place team out there to match them up with. How does it make any sense to have 9-0 Laguna Hills go up against a 7-3 2nd place Artesia, and then have to play a 8-2 league champion in the second round in Santiago.
Empire fan: keep in mind that Artesia from that “not strong” Suburban league, beat your league champion this year.
Kirk: Six of the top-8 teams from the most recent Southern Division poll are in the upper half of the bracket with Laguna Hills, including No. 8 Artesia. The bottom half has three top-10 teams.
Hey Carlos, Segerstrom-Los Amigos have another common opponent. Santiago, the Jags won 49-29, while Lobos lost 30-24 in 2OT. Will be a very competitive game.
Pappy: Good looking out. I missed that one. My brain must have been fried from Sunday’s Bracketmania.
Wish I could be at that Los/Segerstrom game, that’s going to be a barn burner! Don’t feel too bad though as I’ll hopefully be watching the Cavs make it into the second round that night!
Good luck GGL! Underdogs, show’em what you got!
Anybody got info on what kind of team Los Amigos is, big-small, slow-fast, etc. I know they got Ricky Vu. My son played NJB with Ricky back in the day. Very sweet kid with an infectious smile.
hey pappy your forgot the other common opponent the SAINTS. They got beat bye los 17-7 and BEAT the JAGS 35-34…..hey were you not the one who kept talking all kinds of trash how segerstrom was the going to just whipe out santa ana?? The were and have always been the more physical and BETTER COACHED team……LOS is the better team and will WIN……
Wow plenty of teams that wouldn’t make it in the Southwest Section.
Westminster is probably going to make the semi.
Hey huizardamessiah, because you’re a Saints’ fan, get somebody to read the article above to you. SA was already mentioned.
Saints are weak!!!!!!!
Nothing but a joke!!!!!!
They are lucky 2 be in the play-offs.
the costa mesa mustangs are a huge underdog look for them to upset santiago and steam roll through the rest of the bracket. bye bye artesia. go mesa! look for number 13 to take over.
Calvary chapel has a good draw in the first round….NOT!!!!!they are going to get killed and should just forfeit to save themselves the pain and humiliation.
oh ya i forgot look for number 13 in the mesa santiago game
How many teams wish they were in the playoffs? Yeah, some teams are going to get massacred in the first round, but at least they can say they were in the playoffs.
seriously even if Santiago doesn’t make it i hope GG league makes their mark in the 2008 CIF playoffs
