The Breakdown: Pac-5 Division
Seeded teams: 1. Long Beach Poly (10-0), Moore League champions; 2. Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks (10-0) Serra League champions; 3. Tesoro (10-0) South Coast League champions; 4. Servite (7-3) Trinity League co-champions
At-large: Bishop Amat of La Puente (7-3), Serra League
Darkhorse: San Clemente (8-2). The Tritons have to play a road game against Esperanza, and if they win that game they likely would face top-seeded Long Beach Poly in the second round. But the Tritons’ versatile offense is going to create matchup problems for any team.
Players to watch: Long Beach Poly RB Daveon Barner; Long Beach Poly RB Melvin Richardson; Long Beach Poly QB Morgan Fennell; Esperanza RB Jared Moore; San Clemente RB David Espino; San Clemente WR Graham Tenney; Mission Viejo QB Allan Bridgford; Mission Viejo WR/DB Alex Mascarenas; Loyola RB Anthony Barr; Servite RB Gregory Portis; Servite DB Bijon Samoodi; Lakewood RB Jerry Stone; Tesoro WR/DB Preson King; Tesoro QB Robbie Picazo; Los Alamitos QB Clark Evans; Los Alamitos WR Paul Richardson; Mater Dei QB Matt Barkley; Mater Dei RB Jaron Hytche; Long Beach Jordan QB John Timu; Fountain Valley RB Kyle Middlebrooks; Orange Lutheran RB/DB Kyle Dravis; Orange Lutheran RB/LB Garrett Gilliland; Notre Dame QB Ryan Kansdorf; Compton RB James McConico.
Best first-round matchups: San Clemente vs. Esperanza at Valencia High; Loyola at Mission Viejo; Los Alamitos at Tesoro; Orange Lutheran vs. Fountain Valley at Orange Coast College (tentative).

I can't wait to see Tesoro vs. Los ALamitos! This will be a great game to watch.
If both MD and Olu win their first two playoff games, we will see a rematch in the finals. That should be an interesting game.
FV is ready to take on Orange Lutheran. They definitely deserved the spot in the playoffs more than Edison. http://www.baronbanner.com
did that article say steven santana is going to b playing friday?!
Edison beats Mater Dei and if they do not drop a touchdown at the end of the fourth quarter they beat Servite, but they stay home...Would be nice to see FV pull offs of the big upset. Tesoro has the best line in the tournament, Poly best athletes, but poorly coached...
poly has been the school that has always been in the playoff, the school for being a PUBLIC in the URBAN is pretty damn good for coaching/staff... I see NO AND POLY FINAL...
I cant believe there has been no articles written about the ridiculous system used to determine the fate of the the Sunset league playoff reps.
Newport Harbor is the only team in that league that has played well the past three weeks; waxing a weak Esperanza team 35-6 (the 6 pts were scored in 4th quarter on Harbors 3rd team D), crushing Marina (who esperanza beat by 3), and beating Los Al @ Los Al by overcoming a -3 turnover margin and putting together a game winning drive. Newport didn't punt the entire game by the way.
This was a unique situation with the 5 way tie for first place, so a unique solution should have been implemented. At least let all 5 teams get a chance at applying for the at large bid. If the committee truely believes that esperanza was the best team in the league and Harbor was 5th, then disregard this rant.
It's a shame that the team playing the best football at the end of the season doesn't even get a chance to represent the league. Isn't that why we have a playoff system in HS? Is this the BCS? No wait, if this were the BCS then Harbor would have at the very least been the 3 seed in the Sunset.
I predict that all Sunset teams get beat convincingly in the first round, not because the league is weak, but because Harbor is the only team playing good football at this point in the season.
The only teams that deserved to be left out were Edison and Los Al. They were the only team that had a chance to control their own playoff fate and blew in front of their home crowds. Esperanza and Foutain valley will be wishing that they DIDN'T get randomly selected to the playoffs when they're getting blown out by their first round opponents.
Magic
IT WAS THE LUCK OF THE DRAW.
Newport Harbor had the same odds of making it as did the rest of the 4 schools.
Unfortunatly it came down to an odd tiebreaker and two very strong teams got left out.
Just shows how strong the Sunset League was this year. No need for anything negative against the other teams.
Magic,
All of this talk about who should be there and who shouldn’t is moot! The real problem is that the Moore League gets to send 4 teams due to their 7 team league! Take perennial heavyweight Poly out of the equation and a sometimes good .500 ball Lakewood team and you have the weakest league in the Pac-5!
Don’t bemoan the system. 5 teams were at 3-2. That’s it! You’re unhappy that there isn’t a system that would have put the Sailors in the playoffs! Boo-Hoo! Are you just going to complain about it or offer a suggestion how to do it better?
Maybe they should use you! You’re Magic, right? Maybe you think a bunch of Newport Beach ersatz football gurus should sit around in a cigar smoke filled room and do it! How about consulting an oracle, or maybe a ouija board?
Wishing ill on some fine Sunset League young men in the playoffs, who have laid it on the line, week after week, in the most consistent, evenly balanced league in the Pac-5 is both mean-spirited and small-minded!
Best wishes to the Sunset , Trinity and South Coast Leagues! Go O.C.!!!!!!!!!!!!
rachel your insane. No one team is the sunset league deserves a playoff spot more than any other sunset league team. Everybody beat everybody. thats why there was a five way tie. should of went to stats to make the desision but w.e
MAGIC i love you. such a bs way to decide who goes.. Newport dominated esperanza and beat los Al at home. Wierd how there not even third in sunset when they handled the number 1 team...
Look to the Sunset league fan, I am sorry your team didn't get in, but that's the way it goes. Look at the Trinity League where you have St. John Bosco not going to the playoffs and if they were in the Sunset I am sure there would have not be a 5 way tie. Your league was strong just like the Trinity league however not everyone can get in. I believe you could have asked for an at large bid, but at the Same time there are many leagues that could have. It is shame however that you are picking you league to lose. If Newport had won its game we wouldn’t be talking about this. Also what if Newport got the number 3 seed. Do you think they would have beat one of the 1 seeds? Just a question? And don’t you think that with the tradition that both LA and Edison bring to the PAC 5 tournament I can see 1 of these schools getting a 1st round win. So be happy that your team had a good season a cheer on your league.
