A coin flip was needed to break up that three-way tie among Mater Dei, Orange Lutheran and Servite in the Trinity League.
The three-way flip happened this morning at Servite.
The results …
1. Servite
2. Mater Dei
3. Orange Lutheran
That means Servite, as the league’s No. 1 representative, will get a first-round home game against another league’s No. 3 team — or a No. 4, possibly, as the top four finishers in the Moore League auotomatically qualify for the playoffs as the Moore is a seven-team league. Mater Dei will play either another league’s No. 2 or possibly a No. 3. Orange Lutheran will open on the road against a No. 1 or possibly a No. 2.
As there was no head-to-head results way to break up that three-way tie — Orange Lutheran beat Mater Dei, Mater Dei beat Servite, Servite beat Lutheran — a coin flip was needed to settle it. It was a three-way flip, with the odd man out of the three coins getting No. 1. A follow-up coin flip was won by Mater Dei.
Those three teams finished tied on the Trinity last year, too. The 2007 coin flip was won by Servite. Last year’s order of representation was 1. Servite, 2. Orange Lutheran, 3. Mater Dei.
Still to be settled is the Pac-5 at-large team. Their are three candidates with 7-3 records — Bishop Amat, St. John Bosco and Edison. The feeling here is that Amat is going to get it. Dana Hills is a candidate, but its 5-5 record eliminated the Dolphins right away in the process.
Playoff pairings and seedings will be announced Sunday, and posted here at ocvarsity.com. First up Sunday is the announcement of the at-large teams, right around 10 a.m.
Yahoo Servite!!!
Credo . . .
I was afraid of that. Orange Lutheran will probably get Long Beach Poly in the first round. Maybe Tesoro. Hopefully, they will get a high enough seed to luck out and get a number 2 in the first round. Lutheran is a strong team, but with a difficult challenge ahead.
I guess that could also include Esperanza.
Maybe if there is a 3 way tie next year, we could move the coin toss to another location to give MD and OLu a chance at #1 seed (haha)!
Just want to clarify…. I understand Servite was the “odd man out” in the three way coin flip, but if Mater Dei and Orange Lutheran were remaining, wouldn’t Olu get the second seed based on head to head?
amat lost to loyola who bosco beat..
bosco lost to mater dei who edison beat…
amat has the sos over both edison and bosco, but edison is ranked higher and has the better win…
i hope edison gets it but you never know…
we should have just beaten espy…
If your team didn’t get in, like ours (yet), just go to a playoff game and enjoy it!
If you love football, you’ll enjoy watching it live. Season is over for us. (sigh) It was a great ride up until last night.
Good Luck, FV!
Sorry Newport! You deserved better.
BTW
Thanks for this OV Varsity Blog! Fryer, I wish you would have picked esperanza, ‘cuz you almost always guess wrong on our games!
Bwa ha ha ha ha ha
From the playoff pairings, I believe that Orange Lutheran will probably play a #2 seed team such as Lakewood.
My playoff bracket predictions.
1. Long Beach Poly vs. At Large
2. Notre Dame (SO) vs. LB Jordan
3. Tesoro vs. Compton
4. Servite vs. Los Alamitos
5. Esperanza vs. San Clemente
6. Mission Viejo vs. Loyola
7. Lakewood vs. Orange Lutheran
8. Fountain Valley vs. Mater Dei
anyone know wat time theyre gonna post the pairings?
11:00 a.m. Sunday
Probably Sunday, early afternoon
mike:
2 mistakes Lakewood 3rd can’t play an OLU 3rd…and ND#1 can’t play a #2 LB Jordan
Oh. Okay. In that case, ND will play Lakewood and OLU will play LB Jordan then.
3 things to remember 1) 1st and 2nd place finishers go into opposite brackets 2) you can’t play someone in your league until semi’s 3) at-large changes everything (edison or amat)
Chatacter Counts:
When servite won the number 1 seed they still flipped 4 second bcuz u can understand how unhappy mater dei would be if they were ranked 2 spots below a team they beat by 3 touchdowns.
Who cares about winning coin tosses. Winning Pac 5 and State championships are what Olu focuses on.
You have to win 4 games to be Pac 5 champions. We don’t care what order they are in.
