This was the view Saturday afternoon at El Toro, which played host to the Servite-Vila Park playoff water polo match. The Division II quarterfinal showdown was moved from the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Al because of poor air quality from the area fires.
El Toro not only hosted the game with pretty much no notice but helped make fans feel comfortable by placing canopies in the stands.
The Chargers have a powerhouse boys water polo program. They are a pretty classy group, too.
Why is the Trinity League in D-II water polo? 3 of the top 4 teams left in the D-II playoffs are from that League. Which seems to indicate that they are in the wrong Division. How soon can the Trinity League be moved up to DI? Shouldn’t all of their sports programs be in D-I?
Kudo’s to Stoll, et al for re-arranging their Saturday on short notice to provide a safe venue.
Old Dude,
This is the answer I received from a similar question.

Why do public schools have to play against private schools?
CDM can not have a foreign player because CIF feels that he had prior contact with a coach and it might be considered “recruiting”. Yet you can have a group of boys from different zip codes stack the deck/roster of a Trinity league team and it is OK?
What is the difference and why is it allowed?

The principals of the schools make the rules of CIF, you should ask the principal of any high school. They have the power to change it, they just choose not to. I don’t anticipate that league will be in division II next time CIF reorganizes the playoff divisions, especially if Mater Dei wins a championship and JSerra and Servite make it to the quarters.

Lane,
Thank you for the answer.
It would seem that if the private schools continue to do well, CIF would indeed make them D1, but, why should D1 have to contend with them? It seem to me the Trinity league has its own set of rules when it comes to their rosters. Why not let the privates play each other in the entire state in a CIF tournament?
El Toro are the class of water polo, by opening up there pool.
Servite and Villa Park appricate ET
They even opened the snack bar.
Thank you El Toro, you are a class act indeed … good host, good game, good times … the way high school waterpolo should be!
This is Coach Don Stoll of El Toro HS. We enjoyed having two exemplary programs play their quarter-final game at ET, and these comments are appreciated by our program. The credit for the hospitality on this day should go to head girls coach Matt Tilton for setting up the course after his practice and most of all for our booster president Dave Henry and his wife Mary. They are the class act that made this event happen, and Servite and Villa Park participants and fans feel at ease under difficult circumstances. In addition, assistant coach Daniel “Raq” Julson was stellar in dealing with the finicky timing system and setting up a standby system so the players and fans could get the necessary info. Sorry for the clock problems, and we will have to get it fixed ASAP. We had NO problems with the system all year long including vs. Dos Pueblos on Friday.
Thanks Dan for the acknowledgement! I knew I liked your reporting. We have been given a good facility and happy to share with the greater water polo family.
