GARDEN GROVE — Garden Grove broke open a halftime stalemate by scoring 27 consecutive points to defeat Rancho Alamitos, 41-20, on Thursday night in their Garden Grove league finale.
After holding the Vaqueros to a three-and-out to start the second half, Josh Webb returned a punt 35 yards for a touchdown, giving the Argonauts a 21-14 lead. (Full game stats.)
Garden Grove (9-1, 4-1) stayed in the lead and kept the ball on the ground for the entire second half.
The Argonauts’ running back tandem of Sean Young and Jonathan Lopez combined for 234 yards rushing.
Young finished with 154 yards and two touchdowns, while Lopez rushed for 83 yards and a score.
Argonauts quarterback Robby Stevens threw two first-quarter touchdown passes to take a 14-0 lead into the second quarter.
Rancho Alamitos (2-8, 0-5) clawed its way back into the game behind the arm of Mike Frank.
The junior quarterback threw a touchdown pass to Douglas Mitchell and ran a touchdown in from 1 yard out to tie the score, 14-14, at the half.
Frank finished with 240 yards passing and two touchdowns.
