COSTA MESA — Led by a strong ground attack, No. 9 Fountain Valley finished the regular season with a 42-0 victory over Marina on Thursday night at Estancia High.

Midway through the second quarter, after cutting through the Vikings defense for 29 yards and his third touchdown, junior Kyle Middlebrooks broke the Barons’ 27-year single season rushing record. (Full game stats.)

His final stat line against Marina was 178 yards on 20 carries, giving him 1,498 yards on the season.

“[Middlebrooks] is a special kid, a special talent who will be the first person to give his teammates all the credit,” Fountain Valley coach John Shipp said. “He’s got a great group of teammates who would do anything for him.”

With its offense coasting comfortably, the Fountain Valley defense did its part to keep Marina (2-8, 0-5 Sunset League) in check.

The Barons (7-3, 3-2) held the Vikings to under 150 yards of total offense.

Fountain Valley senior defensive end Casey Smith was a force all night, sacking the quarterback four times and forcing a fumble.

Sharing some of the offensive spotlight with Middlebrooks was senior Dylan Garcia, who scored on a 99-yard kickoff return to start the second half and a 21-yard fun early in the fourth quarter.

  • MDFAN says:

To Joe: It’s funny….as a parent of former/current student/athlete s at MD I have never met anyone whose son was “recruited” by Mater Dei. Young men/women come to MD because it is a good academic school, teaches Catholic values and has great traditions. I don’t put down people who choose to go to public school – we just wanted more for our children.
