Mater Dei’s stud QB Matt Barkley isn’t going to come close to breaking the county’s career passing record tonight, which is held by Todd Marinovich, who is on the sidelines tonight.
But Barkley knows how to deliver the big play as he completed a 69-yarder to Victor Blackwell. It looked like Blackwell might go all the way, but Gabe Lemon made a TD-saving tackle.
That just delayed the inevitable. Jaron Hytche scored on a 4-yard TD run to tie it, 21-21, with 6:34 left.
Mater Dei’s defense came up with a big three-and-out to get the ball right back to the offense. Conrad Tavarez came up with a big sack to make it third-and-16.
