The Calhoun Six to Watch: Los Alamitos vs. Newport Harbor

November 11th, 2008, 7:09 pm · 10 Comments · posted by Damian Calhoun, OCVarsity.com since 2004

No. 6 Los Alamitos (8-1, 3-1) vs. No. 10 Newport Harbor (6-3, 2-2)

Thursday, 7 p.m. at Gahr High

Outlook: There so many “what if” situations regarding the Sunset League that it will make your head hurt.

Los Alamitos is in a simple situation: Win and they're in. But will it be that easy? It is never easy in this league.

The Griffins were close to losing their second consecutive league game before rallying for a 22-21 victory over Esperanza.

The Sailors are on of those teams in need of help. Newport Harbor has the tiebreaker over Esperanza, but has already lost to Fountain Valley and Edison.

The Sailors started league with two consecutive losses, but have rebounded with victories over Esperanza and Marina by a combined scored of 84-13.

Quarterback Andrew McDonald has passed for 351 yards in the two games, and JB Green has caught four touchdowns.

This game is certain to go down to the wire. It has to, but who will be celebrating when it is done?

No wonder you never give NH the credit it deserves... Michael McDonald graduated in 2002. ANDREW McDonald is the QB for Harbor.

  • HS says:

The Sailors are by far the best looking team in the Sunset league they are fast, tall and adgil. this one will come down to who wants it .

  • The Sailors are the best looking team in that they have size and speed. Look out Los Al your opponents are getting better each week and this means a playoff birth for them. They are the hardest hitting team that I have seen so far and hard to tackle.

fixed ....and I don't have anything against the Sailors

  • LAHS Fan says:

Best of Luck to both teams and both teams have plenty of potential and to brag about !! Go Griffins !!

  • This should be a close game throughout. Who handles the final minutes better will win.
In general this season, Los Al has won the tighter games more often than Newport Harbor.

Welcome to the Sunset League, Newport Harbor! The Sailors have done well since joining the most closely matched group of teams in the Pac-5 division. With the exception of Marina, any Sunset League team could beat ANY Pac-5 opponent on any given day! Every year the Sunset League teams beat each other up and arrive at the playoffs battered and bruised. The team that stays the healthiest usually goes the farthest! The only difference I see in tomorrows regular season ending game between Los Al and Newport Harbor is Clark Evans. This guy is a "gamer" and will carry the Griffins on his shoulders the rest of the way. Go Griffins!

Newport is a VERY dangerous team. Watch out

  • Deefend says:

Newport Harour 17 Los Alamitos 14

    Esperanza 20 Edison 17

This results in a five way tie for 1st.

  • Tom O says:

NH probably has better lines than Los Al, most teams do, I have no doubt they can run it better and they may be bigger and faster but Los AL usually has the best player on the field - Clark Evans. That will be the case tomorrow. Good luck shutting down a 6'5 225 pound hs QB who looks like a Div-1 college QB. He can run for 130 and throw for 200 at any time and is very tough-a true gamer. Also, Newport probably won't be able to take away both his talented wide-outs all game and one of them will get loose when Los AL most needs it. I see another 1-7 point Griffin victory with NH holding time of posession and total yardage advantages at game end.
