The Calhoun Six to Watch: Cypress vs. Pacifica

November 11th, 2008, 7:08 pm · 7 Comments · posted by Damian Calhoun, OCVarsity.com since 2004

No. 20 Cypress (6-3, 4-0) vs. Pacifica (5-4, 3-1)

Friday, 7 p.m., at Bolsa Grande High

Outlook: If last year is any indication, then this game will not be decided until late in the fourth quarter.

Pacifica defeated Cypress, 35-34 in the regular season last year. The teams met again with a CIF title on the line and the Centurions rallied for a 36-30 victory.

If you’re going to this game, do not leave your seat until the horn sounds.

A victory would give Cypress the outright Empire League title. If it Pacifica wins, it opens the door for a possible three-way tie for the league title (along with Valencia).

Both teams have overcome slow starts to get to this meeting for the league title. Cypress started 0-2 and has won six of its past seven games. Pacifica lost three of its first four and was 2-4 after losing to Valencia in the Empire League opener.

The Mariners have won three consecutive games. Pacifica has been winning without senior quarterback Raymond Huizar (elbow), but running back Josh Brannon has carried the offense. Brannon has rushed for 916 yards in four league games.

If Huizar makes it back for this game or in the playoffs, then the Mariners will be difficult to defeat.

Since allowing 49 points to Mater Dei in the season opener, the Centurions have held all of their opponents to 20 points or less.

Will they able to contain Brannon?

Pacifica Mariners will give it all they got, with or without Huizar
Its the moment we all been waiting for since De7 !!! for this match up
Pacifica will leave it on the field as an entire complete team you can count on that!!!! Go Mariners..
    we are proud of you!!!

  • Needless to say this game will shape the Empire League standings. Cypress seems like they are playing real strong this year. Pacifica lost a tough one to Valencia and should have learned from that loss.

  • Champions Train says:

I said it once, I'll say it again! " Guy Gardener Teams are SOFT & NOT VERY PHYSICAL" They had their chance last year, and they blew it.

    New Divison... No way!! Never!!

  • Those spoiled Cypress kids are going down friday night!

  • ENCORE says:

All PaCIFica has to do is grind out the game with #35 Josh Brannon, keeping Cypress's Offense off the field! The Mariner's will drive right down the field and score and score and score again! With any luck, Ray Ray will be back on the field and torch the Centurian Secondary if needed. PaCIFica will show how well Coached they are and how to play a Tough Physical game to win another Empire League Championship! GO FIGHT WIN GO BLUE AND GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU!!!

Should be a good game, both of these teams tend to play up or down to the level of there competition which sometimes makes them hard to figure out, Cypress has a few more weapons on offense but Pacifica has the most powerful weapon in Brannon on there side, this kid is the real deal and will give Cypress Defense all they can handle, but they will need to be able to throw somewhat or Cypress will crowd the line and slow down Brannon making it a very close game, Cypress QB is a beast to tackle and makes good decisions with the ball and they have a very fast RB in Muhammed, turnovers may end up deciding this one, if i had to make a choice i would go with Pacifica because of Brannon.
