O.C. girls golf teams advance to CIF-SS final

Cypress girls golf coach Doug Mitchell pointed at the big leaderboard hanging outside the pro shop on Monday at Chino’s El Prado Golf Course and asked, “Did you see that? A 76? That’s Torrance’s worst score?”

It sure was.

Led by Jenny Shin’s 7-under 65 on the Butterfield Course, Torrance shot 357 as team, placing first in the Southern Divisional on Monday giving them a place in the team final on Thursday in Arroyo Grande. Cypress (381), Mission Viejo (396) and San Clemente (404) will join Torrance at Cypress Ridge Golf Club.

“I am really impressed with the team that I have this year. Our 4-5-6 golfers have really improved a lot.” Mitchell said. “I think we will be in the hunt (in the finals). But Torrance, they are the class of high school golf.”

Torrance’s scorecard went like this: 65, 69, 72, 76, 76. As a team the Tartars finished 3-under.

“When Torrance is in the field, you are playing for second,” San Clemente coach Mike Hurlbut said. “Last year we missed making it by six strokes … one stroke per player, and that is what we talked about before this round. Every shot counts.”

The Centurions had a pretty impressive scorecard, too, though. Kristina Nhim and Amelia Ek led the team, both shooting a 74. Sally Kim finished with 76 and Nadine Rivera also broke 80 with a 77.

“Nadine has done really well for us,” Mitchell said. “She’s a freshman and she moved up to No. 4 (on the team).”

Out of the three county teams that advanced, Mission Viejo’s Stella Valek had the lowest score, finishing with a 1-over 73. Just like Nhim and Ek, San Clemente’s Anna DePalma went into the clubhouse with a 74.

In another regional at Seven Hills Golf Course in Hemet, Santa Margarita’s Amy Alston had six birdies and finished with a 3-under 69, making her the medalist. However, Palm Desert was the first place team, shooting a 385. Peninsula (394), Santa Margarita (398) and Mater Dei (413) also advanced to Thursday’s finals.

“She (Alston) was really playing smart golf today with great course management on a difficult Seven Hills Golf Course,” Santa Margarita coach Amy Connelly said in an e-mail. “Her short game was really on today and she was sinking crucial putts. She was the only player in the tournament to shoot under par.”
