ORANGE — Westminster defeated host Orange, 45-7, on Thursday at El Modena to clinch at least a share of its fifth consecutive Golden West League football title. (Full game stats.)
Senior running backs Aaron Garbutt and Louie Villa each scored three touchdowns and combined for 321 yards offense as the Lions improved to 4-0 in league and 6-3 overall.
In winning its 26th consecutive league game, Westminster showed few signs of a letdown after its 33-28 victory against Segerstrom last week.
Villa (142), Garbutt (125) and sophomore Robert Gonzalez (100) each reached the 100-yard plateau on the ground as the Lions had 510 yards offense. Kevin Chivacharoen recovered a fumble in the first quarter that Westminster turned into a score.
“We did what we had to do,” said Westminster coach Ted McMillen, whose squad is ranked seventh in the Southern Division. “We’re not making many mistakes.”
Orange (3-6, 2-2) can qualify for the playoffs with a victory next week against Santa Ana (5-3, 2-1).
Orange spoiled Westminster’s shutout on Jake Henry’s 42-yard TD pass to Alfredo Carrillo with 9:42 left in the fourth quarter.
