Here's a team-by-team look at the Sunset League:
(Click on a team name to see season totals.)
Esperanza (7-3, 3-2): The Aztecs upset Edison in the regular season finale to put the final piece of the "Sunset Doomsday Scenario" puzzle into place, creating a five-way tie for first place in the Sunset League between Esperanza, Fountain Valley, Los Al, Edison and Newport Harbor. It was off to Edison High after the game for a series of coin flips.
Here is how it wound up:
Fountain Valley (7-3, 3-2): The Barons are the league's No. 2 representative.
Los Alamitos (8-2, 3-2): The Griffins are the league's No. 3 representative.
Edison (7-3, 3-2): The Chargers are eligible to petition for an at-large berth.
Newport Harbor (7-3, 3-2): The Sailors are eligible to petition for an at-large berth.
Marina (2-8, 0-5): The Vikings are the only team in this league out of playoff contention.
Note: There is one at-large berth in the Pac-5, but there will be serious competition for that spot among the Serra, Trinity, Sunset and South Coast leagues. Finishing in the top three is the only guarantee to keep playing in the postseason.

If Los Alamitos looses.... man the Sunset League would be a mess??
for play-offs
deefend u mean if edison loses right? (which they will)
Here is the worst mess that can possibly happen over the next two weeks in the Sunset League.
Edison win over Barons, but lose the following week against Esperanza
Los AL beats Esperanza, but loses to Newport the following week.
Barons loss to Edison, but win over Marina.
Sunset League would look like this.....
Barons (3-2)
Edison (3-2)
Esperanza (3-2)
Los AL (3-2)
Newport (3-2)
Marina (out)
CArias who would then get the #1 spot through #4?????
Let's make it easier and have Los AL win out and the Barons win out it then would look like this.
1. Barons
2. Los AL
3. Edison with a win over Esperanza
OOOORRRRRR?????
A Los AL wins out and Edison wins out
1. Los AL (4-1)
2. Edison (4-1)
3. Barons (3-2) win over newport
4. Newport (3-2)
5. Esperanza (2-3)
6. Marina
Correction!!
1. Los AL (4-1)
2. Edison (4-1)
3. Barons (3-2)
4. Newport (2-3)
5. Esperanza (2-3)
6. Marina (out)
fealofani: I didn't throw out too many scenarios for Sunset League until after Friday night. So much can go crazy in the Sunset. Nothing can be predicted or counted on. I do not dare call myself smart enoughtpredict anything in the Sunset especially with rivalry games like FV-Edison and LA-Espy coming up.
If your worst case scenario happens, then I will let Buster my one-eyed-Jack Russell Terrier sort that mess out. HaHaHa. Just kidding. Let's see what shakes out Friday. I have a feeling we will have better idea after the Bell and LA-Espy games. If not, I will give up and join the circus.
I look forward to talking to you guys after Friday's games.
fealofani: You seriously did come up with a Sunset Doomsday Scenario. That would be the sickest outcome and the craziest series of coin flips eva. Fo eva eva? Fo eva eva!
Let's go BARONS....this morning I drove to FVHS and it was EEELLLLECCTTTTRRRIIIIFFFFYYYYIINNGGGG!!!!! There was Baron pride everywhere the cars were filled, spirits were high, everybody with bleached blonde hair, blue gold red was everywhere.
Their colors were fly'n, faces painted, ribbons in every girl's hair, matching socks, the boys painted tattoos on their entire person, cars painted Baron colors music blasting across the parking lot, a car blasting "Welcome to the Jungle" (Guns & Roses) in the parking lot. Bushard covered in Baron posters towards Edison while Edison posters up Bushard towards. YEAH IT'S BELL WEEK
Let's say Newport beats Los Al on the last week and Edison is 4-1 and FV is 3-2. Newport and FV would have victories over Los Al and all 3 would be 3-2. How would that playoff set up be determined? Do Newport and FV go because they would both hold a victory over Los Al or would it be a coin flip? Imagine Los Al missing the playoffs at 8-2! Wow! What a crazy league this year.
Sunset League
SO what Now Edison (3-1) beats fountain valley (2-2)
you also have Los Al (3-1)beating Esperanza (2-2
And Newport Harbor (2-2) beating Marina (0-4)
Next week FV plays Marina and will have the upperhand making them
(3-2) and marina (0-5)
Newport harbor, lost to fountain valley which beat los al but fv lost to esperanza
and newport harbor, beat esperanza
Newport Harbor vs Los Al game is one to look foward to
If newport harbor beats Los Al
then newport harbor will become (3-2) and los al will be (3-2)
Edison will most likely beat esperanza. Edison will win the sunset league title if newport beats los al
edison will have a record of (4-1) taking 1st place now if all what i’ve said above is true were would playoffs stands because now you got
3 teams with a 3-2 record
fountain valley
los al
Newport harbor
but how many situations where team a beats team b but team c beats team a
Fountain Valley, Beat Los AL and Newport Harbor, Lost To esperanza
Los Al, Only team to beat edison, and beat esperanza but lost to FV
Newport Harbor, Lost to FV by and lost to Edison but beat esperanza
fealofani: If the Sunset Doomsday Scenario plays out, here's how I would rank the Sunset based on what I've seen of these teams this year:
1. Los Al
2. Edison
3. Fountain Valley
4. Newport
5. Esperanza
But if that Sunset meltdown does happen, fate and coin flips will decide the order.
well wouldnt fv get in the playoffs if esperanza loses to edison and we beat marina
Let's be honest about this, FV should beat Marina soundly. Edison should beat Espranza, that leaves the key game as Newport at Los Al. After the last 2 years between these teams this should be a great game! Last year both Newport and Los Al were 3-2 but Newport went to the playoffs beacause of the Head to head, I assume it would be the same this year.
Carlos, You're correct about the "doomsday" scenerio if Espy beats Edison, BUT if Edison beats Espy you are TOTALLY WRONG that coin flips will determine the playoff slots for FV, NH and LosAl...
If Edison beats Espy, Edison will be the 1st place Sunset team and then FV, NH and LosAl will be tied for second place. You're correct up to this point. However, reality is that FV has wins over NH and LosAl which gives them the tiebreakers and FV will be the 2nd place Sunset rep and NH has a tie breaker over LosAl and NH becomes the 3rd place Sunset rep. LosAl can only get into the playoffs IF they are the at-large team selected from the others in the Serra, SC and Trinity leages left out in the cold... exactly which teams will not be determined until after tonights games.
Los Al has an 8-2 record which should match up well against the other teams, but so much weight is placed on schedule strength... who knows.
Beach Bum is correct with FV having the tiebreaker over both newport and Los AL. Los AL 8-2 and might not get into the playoffs that sucks.
Los AL most likely would not go losing to FV when they were not ranked top 10 and losing to Newport. Esperanza should just go back to North County
Man the Sunset scenario stinks, when you have a team that wins 3 games in a row and then loses coin flips to come in 5th good luck to NH leapfrogging Edison and how come Serra gets 3 teams with a four team league should they noy t get just 2 leaving a spot open for a situation like this year Sunset league, how would you like to be the coach to tell the kids they beat the first and second place reps from their league but they will miss the playoffs just plain stinks CIF should allow any team that wants in to get in to the football playoffs
all 5 teams deserve playoff spot
Edison Chargers - The Ball doesn't lie that's karma about the game taken away from Barons by the cheesy referees poor called game.
Esperanza showed up for this season closing out strong. They have one more season in the Sunset before getting reshuffled. They are going to kill everyone in their new league. Yorba Linda H.S. may have a chance depending on the zoning. How many kids will Esperanza lose then?
Thinking back when when I went to ESPERANZA when YL HS opens they will be the new power house. I would guess they would lose about 80percent of there good players
I keep thinking back to when a 45-year-old George Foreman KO'd Michael Moorer in the 10th round in 1994 to become the oldest heavyweight champion and the only thing HBO announcer Jim Lampley can say is: "It happened! It happened!!"
That's what I was thinking when D.C. called with the score of that Espy-Edison game. I can't believe two playoff-worthy league champions will be left out because of coin flips.
first of all FV didn't lose on a bad call. they lost on a good call. watching film the next day their were 5 FIVE holds on the kickoff return. plus edison was playing without their best lineman and still managed to win. that just shows FV is overrated
