The Calhoun Six to Watch: Fountain Valley vs. Edison

November 4th, 2008, 2:34 pm · 15 Comments · posted by Damian Calhoun, OCVarsity.com since 2004

No. 8 Fountain Valley (6-2, 2-1) vs. No. 4 Edison (6-2, 2-1)

Friday, 7 p.m. at Orange Coast College

Outlook: Another Bell Game. Orange Coast College will be rocking and the play on the field will be physical. What more could you ask for?

Fountain Valley has jumped up to No. 8 in the county poll after consecutive upset victories over Newport Harbor and Los Alamitos.

Kyle Middlebrooks gets a lot of the publicity and rightfully so (1,273 yards and 16 touchdowns). And he is only a junior.

However, aside from the defense (which has been amazing in recent week), quarterback Dominic Ragland also deserves some credit. Ragland has stepped in for injured starting quarterback Steven Santana against Tesoro, Sept. 12. Ragland has led the Barons to a 5-1 record.

When healthy, Edison is probably the best team in the county, but that has been the problem. Edison rebounded from its loss to Los Alamitos with a 55-14 victory over Marina.

The Chargers had Wade Houston (113 yards) and Davion Orphey (112 yards) top the 100-yard mark. That running game will be important against the Barons. Controlling the clock will keep Middlebrooks and the Fountain Valley offense off the field.

That is probably the only way to slow Middlebrooks. The Sunset League is wide open (again). Who wants it?

  • This game should be epic, and no doubt will greatly effect the top 10 next week.

  • Baron in the house says:

Yeah Baby! This is going to be some game, can't wait until Friday night. It's time for the Barons to bring that bell back home where it belongs. Middlebrooks has been waiting for this game all season and stopping him is going to be tough, if there's a hole he will find it. Remember Kyle was the OC Champion last year in track and field in the 100m running a 10.7 and he took 2nd in the 200m. He was only a sophmore then, look out for him in the Spring.Go Barons!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Tritons Win says:

I think the big question is... How healthy is Edison?

Did they not have numerous starters out the last two weeks?

  • Coach G says:

If any team can stop Middlebrooks it will be Edison's defense, they're very strong this year. I watched them stop Matt Barkley's passing game. If Middlebrooks has a weakness Edison's coaching staff and defense will spot it.

  • BEAT edison chargers says:

Coach D, yeah baby it's going to be the GREATEST game of the year. The Smiths are coming....BAM viles down for the count.

It should be a great game with the BARONS taking the game. All teams play with injuries. It comes down to who will play the best through adversity.

  • 1Charger1 says:

I'm hearing a lot of trash talk from people who are finally supporting FV again because they are having a good year. It's almost like FV has won the Bell 3 years in a row. As to the comments about the Smith brothers, haven't seen them play. Sounds like they are good players. They can go ahead and hit Viles (If they can make it there) cause he will get right back up. Has all year! Injuries happen to all teams, unfortunately its part of the game. I don't know if you can say Santana's injury evens out the Edison's injuries, but we can go with that. Middlebrooks will probably break a few good runs on Friday, and maybe even score once or twice (although I think Edison's D will be ready to proove themselves once again). However its a team game and Edison's TEAM is better than FV's TEAM. Should be a classic battle between the cross-town Rivalry's. "Proud to be a Charger"

  • BaronDad says:

The Barons have got people talking! I love it!

I don't trash talk...I will let the game play out and let boys settle this one on the field! This game has become personal...throw out the standings. The Barons are out to make a statement. Good luck!

  • footballfan23 says:

As 1charger1 said matt viles is one tough kid he may get hit but he will be right back up one thing you dont understand is edison has extremely fast linebackers that can contain middlebrooks if they run the right defense. also edison has the running game to run all over FV. FV is gonna blitz like crazy but the way houston and orphey play i think that will set up the play action and FV will be speachless when viles goes deep on a pa and edison puts up 6 final score 28-17 i think edison can have success through the air and do a good enough job of shutting middlebrooks down to win this game

  • Beat Edison Chargers says:

What a great rival can't wait for the game. Barons will carry that momentum through the game. The Defense made their adjustments on the D-Line with some aggressive play and shut Clark Evans (top 10 QB in state) out in the second half. It's about making adjustments on DEFENSE it will go down to the wire this week with BARONS coming out with the win.
