The Calhoun Six to Watch: Esperanza vs. Los Alamitos

November 4th, 2008, 2:34 pm · 5 Comments · posted by Damian Calhoun, OCVarsity.com since 2004

No. 12 Esperanza (6-2, 2-1) vs. No. 6 Los Alamitos (7-1, 2-1)

Friday, 7 p.m. at Valencia HS

Outlook: Who needs this victory more?

Esperanza lost to Newport Harbor last week and will have to play Edison next week. Or is it Los Alamitos? The Griffins lost to Fountain Valley last week and has to play Newport Harbor next week.

This is life in the Sunset League. Esperanza could be 0-3 in league. The Aztecs defeated both Fountain Valley and Marina by three points. That is the power of the Aztec defense.

If Esperanza is able to pressure Clark Evans and force some turnovers and give the offense a short field, then we could be headed for the Esperanza signature low-scoring victory.

Esperanza has held seven opponents to 14 points or less.

The Griffins have to put last week’s overtime to Fountain Valley behind them. Los Alamitos led 14-0 at halftime before losing 21-14.

The Griffins haven’t been able to run the ball effectively in its previous two games (Edison and Fountain Valley).

The Aztecs have allowed only one 100-yard rusher (Kyle Middlebrooks) this season.

Will Esperanza be able to take the Los Alamitos offense out of its comfort zone?

The winner is one step closer to a playoff berth … maybe.
