SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO -- John Murayama scored seven touchdowns, six rushing, and St. Margaret’s extended its winning streak to 36 games Thursday with a 70-6 Academy League victory over Brethren Christian.
Murayama fell one short of the county record for rushing touchdowns in a game shared by three others.
The lightning-quick junior scored on runs of 8, 4, 3, 7, 10 and 2 yards. He also took a screen pass 55 yards as the Tartans (8-0, 1-0) opened a 35-0 halftime lead.
He almost scored on the final play of the half but was forced out of bounds at the 2-yard line after a 23-yard pass reception.
“He’s got exceptional balance and acceleration, and he’s as tough as nails,” Coach Harry Welch said.
Murayama did not play the fourth quarter. His replacement, freshman Matthew Duenes, scored three rushing TDs.
Brethren is 2-6 and 0-1.
St. Margaret's beats up on yet another monster team. Why doesn't this team play any small schools from San Diego? The Coastal League in San Diego is by far the best small school league in the state. All 5 teams in that league would beat this team. Their schedule is terrible. They should not represent So Cal in a bowl game unless they prove they are the best team and by beating up on schools that JV teams in San Diego could beat is a joke.
boo hoo,
Whatever San Diego team this is shouldn't go to the State Bowl because they sound like a bunch of whiny little babies. The CIF will make a financial decision, not one based on fairness.
The Coastal league is a solid league as the Tartans competed against them two years ago in pre-season, (Bishop) and won ... Bishop became the CIF Champion the next year ... If scheduling permits, St. Margarets will compete against more San Diego teams like Parker, etc. ...
Mr. SDFootball, you currently have four teams from your league in the top eleven of (calpreps ranking system) for the Small School Bowl game so stop being such a "dumb-ass" and do your homework before you make more stupid comments .... And as for the Tartans vs Coastal league teams, would be a great match-up !!
Hey SD Football St. Margaret's beat Bishop( I think a D5 or 6) two years ago. You are right about one thing..... It would be fun to beat them again.
I think La Jolla is in San Diego!
St. Margaret's beat a very average Bishop's team 3-0 2 years ago. That Bishop's team went 6-4 and won only one league game. This year St. Margaret's would lose to all five teams in the Coastal League. By the way, in San Diego there are only 5 Divisions, and the Coastal League is all D5 schools.
We have acknowledged that the Coastal League is "solid" and that a match between one of your best and the Tartans would be a good match for the fans, so why must you also beat-up on your own league member such as Bishop ... The Tartans win over Bishop (@ their house), was a close defensive battle and could have gone either way ... Bishop finished that year (7-5) losing in the 2nd round of the playoffs to the CIF Champion ... Two of their three league losses to the were (21-10 and 28-26) which could have gone either way with only one team dominating them that entire season who won the CIF that year ... In 2007 Bishop when undefeated to win CIF. I would say not a bad representation of your league in my book !!
It must be the silly political season... I'm amazed that so many assumably adult people can be so petty and shallow about the efforts of a lot of wonderful young athletes and coaches that are working hard many months each year to try and be sucessful in sports. I've observed and listened to many coaches, both visitors and home, at StMargarets games over the past several years. With few exceptions the student athletes and their coaches have been stand up, ethical men working hard not just to win games, but to raise young men into sucessfull adults of character and integrity. It speaks well for many schools that they see the value of supporting the life building dynamics of team sports, particuarly football. I sure didn't see anyone complaining for many years when StMargarets was NOT winning most games? For twenty years it's been the same size student body, no recruiting, similar schedules put together a year or two in advance and now that they are doing remarkably well people are complaining? Give me a break ! What has happened is that StMargarets has been fortunate enough and far sighted enough to retain one of the very best coaches in American High School football at any level. Coach Welch is taking whatever group of young men he is given each year and simply doing an exceptional job of developing them into the kind of team and young men we all want our sons to be. He is unfailingly supportive and encouraging of his athletes. A little research and it becomes obvious that his athletes come back to see and thank him years after they've had the honor of playing on his teams. I was there when Nate Longshore drove from Cal last year to San Juan Capistrano just to thank Coach Welch for enabling him achieve such national sucess as a university quarterback. For over 30 years men having been coming back to sat thanks. My youngest son, now at Ohio University, is one of those young men whose life has been enriched and blessed by the exceptional student athlete experience he had at StMargarets under Coach Welch and several others before him. So to you complainers I say: grow up, do your homework before you hammer a really good team of wonderful young men coached by an exceptional group of men that take the job of raising, coaching and mentoring young men into sucessfull adults very seriously. You should all be so lucky to experience what happens every day on the field at StMargarets.
Really SDFootball? Is all this anger necessary? My son is on the team and it has been a plaeasure and an honor to get to know both Coach Welch and his wife Cindy these past two years. Coach is tough on our boys, but it truly is a 'tough love'. The entire Coaching staff has been amazing. I have watched our boys develop into strong respectful young men. They are very disciplined, honorable both on and off the field. So if this makes them 'Robotic' (One of the comments from last week) Isn't that a compliment? Isn't that what teamwork is? Going out and doing your job? So maybe alot of these hostile comments come from a place of envy. Pretty weak. Coach Welch, his support, and the boys have worked extremely hard to be in this postion.
"SD Football", I think you are right about the caliber of the Coastal League in San Diego and bravo to that. That said, we are all a brotherhood of small schools and none of us play in the most competitive divisions, nor should we. I cannot say who would win a contest between us and you but what I do know for sure is that pound for pound, my sons have more heart, courage and class than you could ever possibly know, whatever your real name. I am proud to say my son's are John and James, and they play for St. Margaret's. Who are you and where are you from?
SD Football, We are St. Margaret's. You know the school that's currently 38-0 and the defending 2 time back-to-back CIF Champion. Theoretical rankings are nice and talk is cheap, but in the real world you play and win games in order to get where we are. Why don't you let us know who you are and where you're from, or shut up.
To all the young men on football teams across the State of California, I applaud your commitment to your team, coaches, school and fans. I acknowledge the time it takes, the bruises you endure, the exhaustion of a game well played and the heartache of a game not won. I acknowledge the academic duties you face, the SAT test you'll take the morning after a big game and simply the stress of being a young man with even more challenges than some mindless adults can endure.
I thank all of you for providing your family, friends and community the opportunity to sit together under Friday Night Lights to cheer you on.
Let no one on the sideline get you down, tell you that your schedule is not strong or your team is not what you think it is. Losers come in all shapes and sizes, most have big mouths and small brains as in the case of Mr. SD Football.
It's not if you Win or Lose, it's how you play the GAME.
PROUD TARTAN MOM
P.S. Great job John & James...i love U! Mom
Its a sad day when someone starts throwing negative words at a team from another league/division, let along dumping on one of their own league members ... Especially when this blog was a positive about a young man who produced such an impressive game for his team and the fans attending ...
SDFootball, got a suggestion for you ... Show some "class" and advise the moderator of this site that you were wrong to create such a negative blog in this forum and we can all continue this on another blog that focuses on whatever you want !! Delete all of this garbage talk so this young man will not have this as a memory of his fine accomplishment !! I'll start us off, moderator, please delete all of my comments from this blog !!
I'm sure that everyone who commented would agree that this should be done and that we could all rewrite something positive about this young man and his team !!
Hey San Diego Bully, some basic facts, SMES is ranked 201 in California according to MaxPreps, Bishops 517, right at the bottom of the pack of schools in the state. As for SMES were ranked ahead of a cross town school JSerra (247), member of Trinity Leauge, perhaps toughest league in the state. Maybe some additional tidbits on your quote of beating up on people; Coach Welch is the ultimate gentlemen, if he has a big lead at half, he always offers up a running clock, most except his offer. In the last game against Brethren he was told no running clock under any conditions by the opposing coach. Welch explained he had a JV game next day and could not play many of his JV team because CIF rules require a certain amount of rest between playing time. Thus he is put in an awkward position once again and accused of running up the score, etc. This is just not true, SMES was up 35-0 at half time, opposing coach should have put pride away and gone to running clock. Lastly on accusation of us recruiting, its a joke, I can tell you we do not have one athletic scholarship in our school, we have a limited number of scholarships for exceptionally bright kids that don't have the financial means to attend our wonderful school. If you want to accuse us of recruiting its starts in pre-school at age 3 when most of our kids start attending SMES and most stay as we call them "lifers" through the pre-school to lower, middle and high school. In conclusion you should know best, last year you guys had a great run went undefeated, this year you are in last place in the coastal division, bottom line it happens, you never know each year in these small schools what kind of team you can scrape together out of a high school that only has 400 kids and at most 35-40 boys on the varsity and JV teams. So grow up, give us some credit for having a great run the last few years and if you would like I would be glad to see if we can host a game with you next year so we can see if your the better school as you suggest, if you are interested, let me know.
OK I think it's getting too serious here so, time for some jokes.
Q. Why did the chicken cross the road?
A. Because he didn't want anyone to know he was writing a cowardly little hit piece under the moniker "SD football"
While getting his IQ tested, they asked "which is closer, Florida or the moon? SD football answered; "that's too easy, you can't even see Florida".
When asked why he named his new pet Timex, SD football replied; "because the guy at the pet store said I was buying a good watch dog."
All Tartan Fans,
I am from the team currently ranked 1st in the state for small schools. We have lost one game in the past 2 seasons. The next best team in the state in our division is Parker and we will beat them twice this year just like we did last year. What none of you know is that we have been trying to get a game with St. Margaret's for 3 years and every year you don't want to play us. Wonder why? Cuz you would lose to the Christian Patriots!
Young grasshopper, I warned you about talking out of turn without the proper knowledge ... Yes the amigos over at (calpreps.com) have your team as numero uno; however, the wise wizards over at (calhisports.com) have Santa Clara #1, Tartans, #2 and you #3 ... Let's get through our league games and into the playoffs before we start talking who should be given the bowl bid ... Remember, you need to win your CIF Division before they will vote you a bid !!
SD Football, Christain Patriots, really? Who are you related to on the team?
SD Football, Since you're into shoulda, coulda, woulda football, calhisports.com figured it out for you today in their CIF State Bowl Game Rankings. Please note you're ranked #3 behind SMES, assuming you really are from Christian.
