MISSION VIEJO -- Santa Margarita trailed by a touchdown at halftime in its upset bid of No. 3 Mater Dei, but the Monarchs' strong second half carried them to a 57-28 victory in Trinity League action Friday night at Saddleback College.
“Santa Margarita battled back,” Mater Dei coach Bruce Rollinson said. “I challenged my players at halftime to give me 24 minutes.”
Christian Maldonado started it off with a 30-yard interception return shortly after the break and Mater Dei led, 35-21, with 10:32 to go in the third.
The Eagles didn’t score again until Ryan World found Logan Sweet for a 50-yard touchdown pass that made it 57-28.
Mater Dei moved to 6-2 overall, 3-0 in league; the Eagles fell to 2-6 and 0-3.

I am curious if Steve Fryer is going to move Santa Margarita up in the rankings. That has been his logic. Heavens to betsy it wouldn't surprise me. They are 2-6 and should be 1-7 except for a blown call with 30 seconds. I wonder who does the voting and if they even pay attention to what is going on in the games. There are definitely 25 better teams than Santa Margarita in Orange County.
C.T.: Wow, the Monarchs closed out in style. It seems like they might be finding their mojo at the right time.
justincredible: Blame all the bad county ranking voting on C.T. The kid is a little off (Release sarcasm mode from stun, and I'm going to sleep).
I'm just glad my home didn't get egged since I wasn't home to hand out candy since I was at the MV-SC game.
Peace in the middle east.
Great game Monarchs! Kudos to all those defensive players and offensive players who make big plays but seem to be nameless to the press. Your fans know who you are and how hard you work! BEAT ST. JOHN BOSCO!!!!!
Carlos is right.
Full Disclosure: I base my top 10 voting on school uniforms, not win-loss records, strength of schedule or anything else that's relevant.
