Final Instant Analysis: Mission Viejo 42, San Clemente 37

October 31st, 2008, 11:45 pm · · posted by

For those who kept up with the “Instant Analysis” all night, you might remember I put this game in the fridge after MV scored on its opening drive of the second half to take a 35-10 lead over the Tritons.

What you don’t realize is that was just an ode to the late Chick Hearn, and it was meant to motivate the Tritons to keep on going. Clearly some Triton fan out there read that post and text messaged somebody on the SC sideline and the Tritons accepted the challenge.

My master plan almost worked. Actually it did work because the MV defense must have heard about the reverse phsychology I was using on the Tritons and realized it was really double-reverse psychology for the Diablos.

You didn’t think of that did you. I can be a mad genius.

The Diablos defense showed tremendous heart on that final series. SC had all the momentum, but MV cornerback Jake Staszak picked off Duke DeLancellotti on fourth down and ran out the clock with his return to preserve the victory for the Diablos.

This has turned into one of the best rivalries in the county.

MV has certainly locked up No. 2 in the South Coast League and SC will take No. 3 unless something crazy happens.

Both teams will be dangerous in the Pac-5 playoffs.

To all my OCVarsity homies out there, I got dibs on Mission Viejo vs. San Clemente in 2009. I called it first on Oct. 31, 2008.

BTW, MV vs. SC was the Cox3 “Game of the Week.” It will be broadcast on Cox3 tonight at 11, Saturday at 2 p.m., Sunday at 8 p.m. and Tuesday at 8 p.m. This is must-see TV for high school football fans.

  • Is all I know is that I have been saying for the past 6 months that the SCL will be A LOT more than 1 and out in CIF this year BELIEVE it!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • CARLOS ARIAS says:

Kookyclemente: San Clemente has played valiantly in defeat the paast two weeks. They are playing with Bushido, which is Samurai code for the way of the warrior.

  • deefend says:

    easly.. could be 8-0

  • AMANDAAALEON says:

MISSIIIIONNN ALL THE WAY! NOW WE JUST NEED FOR TESOR TO LOSEE 2 GAMESS HAHA WELL A DIABLO CAN DREAM :)

  • Dan Albano says:

Carlos – don’t forget about Dana Hills. The Dolphins are 2-1 and have games with Mission Viejo and Tesoro left. The Diablos will have some trouble stopping Sean Schroeder and co.

  • CARLOS ARIAS says:

AMANDAAALEON: Two games is asking for a lot, but keep hope alive. Aliso Niguel would need a Herculean effort, but Dana Hills has Sean Schroeder and he can chuck it and score points.

  • truebruin says:

san clemente isn’t 8-0 tho because they don’t know how to finish out games. they never have been in the past, they especially haven’t against mission viejo, and they wont again this year in the pac-5 playoffs wen they get paired with a trinity league team (again).

  • CARLOS ARIAS says:

I’m with you “Action” Dan Albano. I’ve seen Schroeder and homie got skills. I’m not counting them out. I am only trying to use my triple-reverse psychology on the Dolphins. It’s all about motivation.

  • you all are FUNNY!!!!!! I never thought that I would root for DANA like this but go DANA

  • CARLOS ARIAS says:

truebruin: You are bringing the Trinity thunder. I’ve seen Trinity, South Coast and Sunset teams this season and there is a lot of parity out there. It would be a bad idea for Trinity teams to sleep on the South Coast.

  • CARLOS ARIAS says:

kookyclemente: SC and Dana fans coming together, that like Democrats and Republicans coming together. I think this was MLK’s dream, to see to coastal communities coming together to fight for South Coast League supremacy … Wait a minute that wasn’t in his MLK’s speech. Whateva, it’s beautiful to see.

Before the 4 game stretch against LH, DH, Tesoro, and MV, I predicted 2-2. Many Triton fans bashed me, said I am not a true fan. I kept saying I am just being realistic. I have watched a lot of games in Eric Patton era. He is an awesome guy, but his teams had never won a big game. (again, to clarify, I do not consider games like LH and DH big games when SC was favored to win. I consider big games toss ups or when Tritons are underdogs) The team often commit stupid penalties (as in Tesoro game). I didn’t see the game last night, but the result is all too familiar. I do think South Coast this year can hang with anyone out there. If Trinity pulls a 3 team tie like last year, with a lucky match up, San Clemente might be able to make some noise. Remember SC-Servite last year? (another close game SC had the chance on a late drive in 4th quarter to win) I refuse to get heart broken by this team anymore

  • Tritons Win says:

    Just,

You are constantly bashing and harrasing this team and why I do not understand. If anything, this team should be commended as they lost the entire team last year and lost Patton, Murphy,Douglass, Curtis and many other 2-3 year starters. This team only had 5 returning starters total and has done a great job. Yes, they did not beat a Tesoro team with over 12 starters back and they also did not beat MV who had a wealth of kids back from last year as well. Having only 5 returners back and the kids playing like they are is testament to the players, the coaches and most of all the entire program. No one expected this team to be even over .500. The register even labled them a team under construction. Whule they have lost two games by 9 points combined, I think the team considering the circumstances has done a hell of a job and they have gotten better each week.

I see that you refuse to get hearbroken anymore and that is fine, no one missed you last night anyways.

  • Damian Calhoun, OCVarsity.com since 2004 says:

I know Triton Nation might be disappointed, but you have to respect the job that coach Patton is doing this season. They could have easily packed up and quit when they fell behind 35-10. If they could have slowed Bridgford and Co. in the first half, then the game might have had a different ending. I wouldn’t want to play them in the playoffs.

  • I think the common thought preseason was San Clemente was going to be down this year. They are two last possessions away from an 8-0 record and maybe the top spot in the county.
I think the Tritons are one of the better surprises and success stories this year.
As for the playoffs this year, it’s all about who gets hot. Can’t wait for CIF.

  • Nolan Adair says:

Congrats to MVHS. Way to step up the defense on that last drive. Go Diablos. That is my home school.

  • tritondefense says:

    guys,
why are we rooting for dana? if they win we’re outta the playoffs, and hate to break it to you Carlos Arias but no we did not know of your “ode to the late Chick Hearn”. We played our a$$Es off in the second half because we knew we weren’t playing triton football.

here’s a thought, what if we played all four quarters against MV and Tesoro the way we played the last three quarters of the Tesoro Game and the last half of the MV game.

you guys dont have to take me seriously, but we’re going deep into cif.
