GARDEN GROVE -- Santiago jumped to a 21-point lead midway through the second quarter Thursday night, then had to rely on Robert Fernandez’s field goal early in the fourth quarter to post a 24-21 victory over La Quinta at Bolsa Grande.

The Cavaliers (7-1 overall), unbeaten in the Garden Grove League at 3-0, used Chris Ortega's scoring run and TD toss to Juan Sanchez, which were sandwiched around Paul Escamilla’s 35-yard fumble return for a score, to go up, 21-0.

The Aztecs (2-6, 0-3) got a 38-yard scoring pass from George Martinez to Brandon Guillory to cut the halftime deficit to 21-7.

Nathan Do’s 4-yard run for La Quinta was the only score of the third quarter.

Fernandez’s field goal put Santiago up, 24-14, with 11:06 to play.

La Quinta made things interesting, scoring on a 17-yard pass from Martinez to Do with 1:32 left.

La Quinta had one last gasp, but a 23-yard pass to Do only got the ball to midfield as time ran out.

Nathan Do keep closing the games strong I know you're a gamer. Keep playing hard. Nathan Do is a good overall player that can play anywhere on the field.
