COSTA MESA -- With a four-game losing streak hanging over its head, Estancia came out with renewed intensity, and it paid off with an early lead that led to a 41-7 victory over Godinez on Thursday night.
The Eagles’ coaching staff tinkered with the game plan ater a disappointing loss to rival Costa Mesa in an Orange Coast League game last week.
With some young players in new positions, Estancia (3-5, 1-1) managed to control the game on both sides of the ball.
“It’s been five weeks since we’ve felt success,” Estancia coach Mike Bargas said. “We did some nice things all three ways, and we need it going down the stretch for these last few games.”
The Eagles’ key offensive weapon, senior Carlos Mendez, was once again a big producer, gaining 146 yards on 18 carries with three touchdowns.
“We made some blocks, and (Mendez) just needs a little block,” Bargas said.
“If guys just hold onto their blocks a little bit longer, he’ll make things happen, and tonight he made things happen.”
Beyond the offensive execution, Estancia’s defense also played its part.
The Eagles linemen sacked the Grizzlies (1-7, 0-3) on five occasions.
Estancia held Godinez scoreless until late in the fourth quarter, when junior Santiago Fuentes bull-rushed his way into the end zone from 5 yards out.
Fuentes rushed 20 times for 74 yards for the Grizzlies.
Estancia’s junior Alex Abalos rushed six times for 34 yards and a touchdown.
This is Godinez inaugural season which means you have 15 & 16 yr olds playing against 17 & 18 yr olds. So give them a break. Godinez pushed estancia's line back back plenty of times. They scored because they were open. Estancia's defence did they're job. But when my 15 yr old 6 foot 2 boy turns 18, he'll be a force. So for now just let the kids have fun. The league wanted a varsity team & Godinez gave them what they had. Godinez kids are young and haven't played long together so be nice!
Just wait till next year when these young players have more experience.
Probably going to be a contender for the OCL Title.
The FB Santiago Fuentes....He's a beast!!!!!!!!
Go get them Grizzlies.
. I do agree this year is all about learning what it is like to be hit by an 18yr old experenced ball player. I think these games will show not only what the kids got but what the coach has got. I have also been at the games and I have personally seen the Grizzlies play a better game of ball. The loss I can handle, but you can bet I am still going to yell at them like I do my tv on Sundays.
Make sure to invite all your families to the last game. Lets show these boys we are there for them. They have supporters of the Black and Gold...
YOU DONT WANT NO BLACK AND GOLD!!!
it will be diff next year indeed
