The Santa Margarita girls golf team dominated the first day of competition at the Trinity League Individual Finals on Monday as six Eagles players shot 40 or lower on the front nine at Willowick.
Amy Alston and Kelsey Hummer, who helped Santa Margarita post an undefeated season, both finished with a 1-over 36 leading the 30 players who qualified for today’s second round at Tijeras Creek. Their teammate Tarah Taylor had a 37 while Desiree Dubreuil (Mater Dei), Victoria Nguyen (Mater Dei), Micala Mendoza (Mater Dei) and Alex Bush (Santa Margarita) all shot a 38.
As a team the Eagles finished with a 187, a six stroke improvement over their last round at this course. On Oct. 16 at Willowick, Santa Margarita clinched the league title with a 193-202 victory against Mater Dei. But that was just the first in what has become a series of low scores. Last week, the Eagles had their best showing of the season on a par-36 course shooting a 191 at Arroyo Trabuco. The Eagles’ scoring average for their last five matches was an impressive 199.8.
“The big goal for us has been progress,” Santa Margarita coach Amy Connelly said. “We have been trying to get better and better each match, and we have had some here lately that have been under 200. Like I said the big thing for us this year has been progress.”
The top 16 golfers, plus any ties, from today’s match at Tijeras Creek will all advance into Thursday’s league finals at Seven Hills. This round will be comprise of 18, not nine, holes.
