COSTA MESA -- Zach Smith rushed for four touchdowns, and Laguna Beach scored three times in the fourth quarter to defeat Calvary Chapel, 34-12, on Thursday at Orange Coast College.
The Orange Coast League victory was the third in four games with sophomore Austin Paxson as starting QB. The Breakers (3-5, 2-0) have averaged 39 points in those games.
Calvary Chapel (2-5, 0-1) mustered little offense and was hurt by three fumbles and an interception.
The score was 14-12 heading into the fourth quarter, but Andrew Paddon — the senior who began the season at quarterback — returned a punt 43 yards to the 11 to set up Smith’s next score.
The play followed a pass interference penalty against Calvary Chapel on second-and-11.
Calvary crumbled after that. Smith scored from 66 yards on the next drive, and followed that with his second 1-yard TD run. Smith carried 14 times for 132 yards.
