SANTA ANA — Costa Mesa improved its Orange Coast League record to 2-0 with a 27-14 victory over Godinez on Thursday night at Segerstrom High.

The Mustangs (3-5, 2-0) overpowered the Grizzlies (1-7, 0-2) with their running game.

The Mustangs rushed for 302 yards — spread out among five running backs. Leading the way was Robbie Gemayel, who rushed for 148 yards on only seven carries, including a 66-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.

Costa Mesa’s Antwon Byrd rushed for 88 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries.

The Mustangs were forced to rely heavily on their running game because the Grizzlies did not allow them to complete any of their eight pass attempts.

Godinez intercepted quarterback Todd Davis once.

Godinez’s Victor Silva passed for 99 yards.

THAT SHOWS HOW BAD COSTA MESA IS AT FOOTBALL THAT THEY BEARLY BEAT GODINEZ AND GODINEZ IS IN THEIR FIRST YEAR OF VARSITY, THE COCHES AT COSTA MESA STINK

Godinez played a good game last night. Yes they do have a very yourng team and they are hanging in there. Its tough being the new kid on the block in the game. If they can get one more game under their belt I think they will be set for a great year next year.

    GO GRIZZLIES!!

I’m so proud of the Grizzlies. They are improving every day in practice and every game they play. Watch out everybody the grizzlies are coming and they will be a force to reckon with next year.

    The Tradition begins….

@Oiler, you don’t have to shout. It’s obvious you don’t have netiquette. Your knowledge of football lacks as well. Let’s see Mesa has had it’s share of support problems and coaching issues, nevertheless it’s up’s and down’s yet of late. So for the kids in that program this is a positive in a community full of cynicism and “keeping a brother down” mentality. Let’s be happy for a third straight win, which is more than I can say for HB. I give HB credit for the teams you’ve beaten and lost too, solid teams from solid programs. Mesa’s opponents losses combined are 23-12, not bad, also solid programs. All ranked in CIF except one. Keep it up Mesa, congratulations of your win, and Godinez is on the up, with a young team, keep it going boys!

    Later folks!
