Tempers flare after Western beats Magnolia

October 16th, 2008, 11:22 pm · 2 Comments · posted by DAN ALBANO, ocvarsity.com

Moments after Western's 48-14 victory against Magnolia on Thursday night, coaches from both teams exchanged heated words on the field at Western.

Western coach Toby Howell and Magnolia coach Dave Perkins later made allegations about opposing players throwing punches during in the Orange League game.

Perkins also was miffed that Western starter Phil Pedro scored on a 55-yard touchdown run that capped the scoring with 2:47 left in the fourth quarter. Western went for the 2-point conversion and failed.

Was Pedro's late TD run an example of Western running up the score? You bet.

Magnolia had tried unsuccessfully to recover an onside kick, and perhaps that pushed the Pioneers to try for another score.

To its credit, Western had played some reserves earlier. The Pioneers went for most of their 2-point conversions, so that last attempt didn't bother me. But they Pedro's run certainly bothered Magnolia, and rightfully so.

The coaches went their separate ways before long but their outburst might have been caught by former Southern Section Council president John Dahlem, who was at the game. Both Howell and Perkins might be hearing from Dahlem about their actions.

For the record, Western has defeated Magnolia 23 consecutive years.

figures if it were up to western they would run up the score on all thier orange league foes except the team they would most love to do it against becuese they cant, they allways go for the 2 point conversion but in the playoffs it came back to bite them in the butt, so if you want to advance further in the playoffs you better develope a kicking game like most normal teams do. and be ready for a battle on friday, oops you already know that!

I just came across this, I can't believe that people would think that Phil Pedro's 55 yard TD run constitutes running up the score by Western. There is 2 min and change left on the clock, Western has the ball at midfield. What are they supposed to do, just lay down or take a knee. Western was just running out the clock with a run up the middle. Is it Coach Howells fault that Pedro scored. Was Pedro supposed to drop on the ground after he got passed the secondary. I think it was Magnolia's fault for not tackling Pedro. It was a 55 yard run not a pass.

Was Pedro's late TD run an example of Western running up the score. You Bet! (What idiot wrote this)

It was a f***ing 55 yard run. You got to have more sense than that. OK, if it was the same situation but, 4th down and Western threw a 55 yard TD pass to Pedro. ( you cry baby's might have an case)

Coach Perkins and Coach Howell goodluck to you both in the post season.
