ANAHEIM -- The Loara Saxons started their Empire League season in fine fashion Thursday night.
Loara, which was picked to finish fifth according to the preseason coaches poll, defeated host Katella, 31-10, at Glover Stadium.
Coach Dean Lappin wasn’t exactly sure when the last time Loara (5-1, 1-0) began league with a victory, but he said that it probably was the 2000 or 2001 season.
Quarterback Marcus Meraz threw four TD passes for the Saxons.
Loara started slowly in the first quarter but rebounded in the second quarter with Meraz leading the way.
Meraz threw three of his four touchdown passes in the second quarter as Loara took a 21-3 lead into halftime.
“We got into our rhythm and executed a little bit better,” Lappin said. “Second and third quarter, I was very pleased.”
Katella (1-5, 0-1) scored late in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard run by quarterback Andy Judd.
So ... team picked fifth beats team picked sixth!
Good start for Loara, but it's the other four teams Saxons need to worry about
