CERRITOS — Clark Evans demonstrated pinpoint-accuracy with his passing Thursday, completing 13 of 15 passes for 266 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 4 Los Alamitos to a 42-7 victory over Marina in the Sunset League opener for both teams.

Evans connected with Paul Richardson for three scores, on plays of 30, 40 and 64 yards.

Evans added a 1-yard TD run and Cody Perez a 15-yard scoring run as Los Alamitos (6-0, 1-0) raced to a 28-0 halftime lead.

“Paul kept getting wide open because everyone on the defense focused on Darryl (Jenkins),” Evans said.

Perez finished with 112 yards on 14 carries, but Evans finished with only 22 rushing yards as the Griffins emphasized passing.

“We took what they gave us,” Coach John Barnes said. “It was important to get home (after four consecutive road games) and get a league win.”

Marina (2-4, 0-1) scored when Zach Couey hit Mitch Huffman on a 22-yard TD pass in the opening minutes of the third quarter.

He didn’t rush because he was injured. Were you blind? He was limping the whole game.

Too bad Marina’s O-line forgot to show up, this might have been a good game if they remembered to get on the bus Thursday night. At least the all-star running back can block, and run, and tackle, but give him the ball and he gets crushed…no protection.

The offensive line doesn’t play defense, buddy. The blame can’t be shouldered on one position in a 42-7 game.

This is not the time or place for Marina “fans” to be putting down a hard working group of young men. All these players have worked hard the entire off season and are coming into league play. Marina is a young team, many of which played in their first Varsity Sunset League Game last night. Please parents lets be an example to our sons, the young men we love…..

There’s a difference between working hard only to fear a tough opponent without trying, and working hard and respecting a tough opponent and trying harder. It’s not just the results of the game that lead me to say this, but the body language and lack of effort in each play that’s plaguing not just the o-line, but the team and the program. As a recent former high school football player, I know that a lack of effort and the body language that was displayed would not be tolerated in a successful program. This is all about their mentality; I’m sure that these guys work just as hard as everybody else, but if they don’t have the desire, if they’re not taught to work hard and try harder when the opposition gets harder, then the other guys will just tear them apart.

samfan, i played football at marina all four years and it was fairly recent. im going to let you in on a little secret. the talent gap between marina and los al, esperanza and edison is HUGE. compare the marina sideline to the sideline of one of those teams. i will bet money that los al/esperanza/edison has a lot more players, way bigger players and players that are just flat out faster and more experienced.

hard work and effort can only take you so far. i didnt see this game so i cant comment on it and how the players might have played, but when both teams play hard the team with more talented players will win. heart and all that is great, but a guy who is 5’9 170 lbs isnt going to beat the guy who is 6’3 240 lbs unless the bigger and faster guy just isnt trying at all. i guarantee you that none of the elite sunset league teams ever suffer from a lack of effort and hard work.

marinafan makes a good point, los al is a step up from any non conference teams marina plays. ive heard the players are working a lot harder in the offseason, something that didnt happen when i was there. dont put down 15 and 16 and 17 year old kids samfan.
