Frankly Fryer: Mater Dei-Servite

October 15th, 2008, 4:15 pm · 1 Comment · posted by Erlina

NO. 6 MATER DEI (3-2, 0-0) VS. NO. 2 SERVITE (3-2, 0-0)

Site, date time: Cal State Fullerton, Fri. Oct. 17, 7:30 p.m.

Outlook: Wow, there is a lot of excitement out there for a game of 3-2 teams. But one team could be 0-5, or both could be 0-5, and Mater Dei-Servite would sell out a stadium. Everybody knows the streak, going into this Trinity League opener: Mater Dei has not lost to Servite since 1988.

Mater Dei’s strength is its Matt Barkley-led passing game – and defending the pass is Servite’s weakness. If the Friars can put the sort of pressure on Barkley that Edison did when Edison beat Mater Dei two weeks ago – and that’s the sort of pressure Servite put on Edison quarterback Matt Viles when the Friars beat the Chargers – then Servite will win.

Winner: Servite

First, good call on who will win; second of all, I wonder if you have seen any of the Servite games? Servite can and has defended the pass but it is true, they have struggled at the corner positions. Last week against Notre Dame, they did not have Dwight Storay and that was the X factor. As far as the statement that Servite’s weakness is the pass, I would argue that one. I believe the coaches for some strange reason are not making the correct adjustments. They have the players, but for some strange reason every game looks like they have a new guy at the corner position? Marcoux, should be no where near the CB position (sorry but thats the truth). If the coaches don’t make the correct adjustments, Mater Dei will kick their butts…
