FOUNTAIN VALLEY (4-1, 0-0) VS. NO. 10 ESPERANZA (4-1, 0-0)

Site, date, time: Valencia High, Thurs. Oct. 16, 7 p.m.

Outlook: This Sunset League opener for both teams pits high-scoring Fountain Valley, averaging 31 points a game, against defensively-tough Esperanza, allowing nine points a game.

Fountain Valley has a highly-productive running back, Kyle Middlebrooks, whose 821 rushing yards is the fifth-highest figure in the county and is average 10 yards a carry. He also knows his way around the end zone, with 14 touchdowns. Esperanza is expert and stopping the run. Fountain Valley won't be able to score 31 against Esperanza, and Esperanza probably will score the three touchdowns needed to beat Fountain Valley.

Winner: Esperanza
