Here are updates on the Academy, Century and Empire leagues:
Academy League
St. Margaret's (5-0) was the preseason pick to win the league, and the Tartans haven't done anything to make people change their minds. St. Margaret's has outscored its opponents, 241-26, and shut out four of five opposing teams. They are on track for another berth in the division final and a possible berth in the CIF state bowl game. The interesting race will be for the second playoff berth, between Sage Hill, Brethren Christian and Capistrano Valley Christian. The three teams have one victory combined among them.
Century League
El Dorado (1-4) has dominated this league by winning three consecutive league titles. Thanks to graduation, though, the Golden Hawks seem to have fallen back to the pack. El Dorado, led by quarterback Kane Wilson, should be the favorite on experience alone. All six teams enter league play under .500. Tustin could be the most dangerous team. The Tillers (2-3) started the season 0-3 but have rebounded with two consecutive victories with running back Anthony Wilkerson leading the way. Canyon (2-3) probably has the best talent in the league.
Empire League
One look at the standings, and this league race looks wide open — again. Last year, Pacifica, Valencia and Kennedy all finished tied for first at 3-1. Cypress went 2-2 and advanced to the CIF playoffs as an at-large berth. The Centurions then went on to win the title. Cypress (2-3) was the preseason pick to win the title this year but has struggled in nonleague. The same is true with Pacifica (2-3). Loara (4-1) is off to its best start in years but has to prove that it can compete in league.
