In just a weekend San Clemente’s girls’ volleyball team went from a season of woe to a season of “Whoa!”
After winning the Capistrano Valley Tournament, to improve their record from 2-5 to 10-5, the Tritons topped Tesoro last week and hung in against national No. 1 La Costa Canyon in the Torrey Pines Tournament, scoring more than 20 points twice and having a game point in the third, although they got swept.
“It took us awhile to find a staring six that really worked well together and really put it all together,” coach Rob O’Rear said. “And that’s kind of where we are right now.”
Senior Erin Yoder, a former standout at outside hitter, moved to libero this year and starred as the MVP of the Capo Valley tournament. Her cousin, sophomore Molly Yoder, and senior middle blocker Shannon Ward have provided much of the offense in her stead.
O’Rear also sees an encouraging trend, as his team prepares to compete for a South Coast League title.
“We’ve always been an undersized group, so we usually have to outlast teams,” he said. “This year, we’ve been able to sweep a lot of teams. So, there’s something special going on.”
