IRVINE -- The extra point Jae Byun blocked in the first quarter didn’t seem like a big deal, but it proved to be the difference as Sunny Hills scored late and stunned University, 7-6, in a nonleague game at Irvine High.

Byun’s block and a key interception, the efforts of quarterback Johnny Nguyen, running back Elliot Colby and defensive lineman Danilo Nam, made a winner of Lancers coach Marcello Giuliano on the field where he used to play and coach for Irvine High.

“These kids play so hard,” Giuliano said. “We should not have won that game, and they just found a way. They do not quit.”

University (4-2), ranked fifth in the CIF Southern Division, outgained Sunny Hills (3-2), 273 yards to 97.

But the Lancers turned Byun’s interception in the fourth quarter into a 10-play, 57-yard drive that was finished off on a 1-yard dive into the end zone by Colby with 2:45 left.

Nam, filling in for the team’s normal kicker, booted the extra point for the victory.

this shows why we say uni is ranked incorrectly in the polls.

  • Md says:

yup UNI is soooo over rated

  • HIGHSCHOOLFB says:

YA YOU KNOW UNI IS OVERRATED WHEN THEY LOSE TO THE WORST TEAM IN THE FREEWAY LEAGUE...

Highschoolerfb....I don't think a 3 & 2 record is the worst team in the Freeway league. You need to check the standings of the Freeway League prior to posting your comments.

No one is saying Sunny Hills is a power house but this year they are playing well together as a football team, big emphasis on team. Teams that play well together win games. Lets here it for the new coach, Marcello Giuliano, he has a great job with the program and teaching the boys how to play the game of football and believing in themselves.
Unfortunately teams from the Freeway League (North County) just don't receive any respect. It is about time they do. As you will see tonight when La Habra plays San Clemente. Go La Habra bring some well deserved respect back into the Freeway League.

    "Go Lancers"

Uni #3 thats right, they might not have even close to the same team as last year, are scoring less, and the games are closer, but they are still 2-0 on the season and during innercity play, i dont care how good or bad northwood is when its city rivalry that all goes out the window, Uni’s ready 2 repeat last year just watch

Well we are watching and hate to say told u so... Uni is puttig up some decent stats but they cant seem to finish games. At Best UNI will beat Irvine again.

First, no need to yell, fella.

Second, you have no idea who the "worst team in the freeway league" is going to be this year.

Third, Uni is overrated if they are "rated" at all.

    I like ice cream.
