Frankly Fryer: Villa Park - Corona del Mar

VILLA PARK (2-2) VS. CORONA DEL MAR (4-1)

Site, date, time: Newport Harbor High, Fri. Oct. 10, 7 p.m.

Outlook: On a list of most-underrated teams in the county, Corona del Mar could be at or near the top. The Sea Kings' only loss was to No. 10 Newport Harbor. Alas, the cumulative record of teams Corona del Mar has beaten is 4-14, so it is difficult to get a handle on just how good the Sea Kings are. This game will teach us a lot.

Villa Park is better than it was last year, and has consecutive victories over Trabuco Hills and Sunny Hills. The Spartans are good on defense – only once have they allowed double-figure scoring – but the offense still is getting it together. Corona del Mar is averaging 36 points a game, but has done so against teams that are struggling. This one, the final nonleague game for both, will reveal a lot about how well they could do in league play.

Winner: Corona del Mar
