Frankly Fryer: Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks-Servite

NOTRE DAME OF SHERMAN OAKS (4-0) VS. NO. 2 SERVITE (4-1)

Site, date, time: Cerritos College, Fri. Oct. 10, 7:30 p.m.

Outlook: Many high school football teams issue T-shirts with the season schedule on the back. Some weeks ago, I saw a kid wearing one of those with the Servite schedule on the back, tapped the kid on the shoulder and asked, “Are you guys crazy?” Four of the Servite’s five nonleague opponents are in calhisports.com’s California top 25 or were when the Friars played them. That includes Notre Dame, No. 17 in the state.

Notre Dame keeps manufacturing excellent quarterbacks. This year’s model is junior Ryan Kansdorf, who passed for 371 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 148 yards and a touchdown. Servite, though, has the defense to handle him. The Friars also have one of the county’s more exciting running backs, Greg Portis, who has rushed for 566 yards and averages 8 a carry. Servite is coming off of a bye week, so they should be healthy, rested and ready. A potential danger for the Friars is looking one game below Notre Dame on the back of those shirts – Mater Dei. They need to win this one for confidence and momentum before thinking about the Monarchs.

Winner: Servite
