Frankly Fryer: Cypress- Irvine

CYPRESS (2-2) VS. IRVINE (4-1)

Site, date, time: Irvine High, Fri. Oct. 10, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Cypress hooked up with Mater Dei in its season opener and, predictably, got routed, 49-7. The Centurion then lost a heartbreaker, a three-point loss to Artesia of Lakewood, beat not-so-good Pioneer of Norwalk, then beat pretty-good University, and easily, too, 35-7.

Irvine has beaten teams that are a combined 3-15. That can be attributed to the tradition of all the Irvine city public schools playing each other in nonleague games, and this is not a good year for football among the Irvine city public schools. Cypress seems to have recovered from the trauma of that season opener and is improving.

Winner: Cypress
