Frankly Fryer: Canyon-Laguna Hills

CANYON (2-2) VS. LAGUNA HILLS (4-0)

Site, date, time: Laguna Hills High, Fri. Oct. 10, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Your Frankly Fryer pal generally goes along with his top 25 ranking when picking winners. He is going against the formula here.

Laguna Hills, No. 13 on the chart, has beaten teams that are a combined 4-14. The Hawks are good, but untested. Canyon, No. 20, beat No. 16 Fullerton four weeks ago (Fullerton later beat No. 19 Western, which beat Canyon, thus the semi-nonsensical ranking order). Canyon lost to No. 14 Foothill, which is 4-1, and Bonita of La Verne, which is 3-1. With the thinking that Canyon is more battle-tested, the pick here is …

Winner: Canyon

  • This wasn't in our OCVarsity Staff Picks contest, but I thought I would chime in on this one any how. I like Laguna Hills to win this one, for some reason the Golden Hawks remind me of El Dorado from the past two years - a team that just knows how to win football games.

  • Kirk says:

The Golden Hawks would remind you of El Dorado because they ARE El Dorado. LH is just the Hawks. Another slight correction, Canyon beat Bonita. Game should come down to the Hawks ability to run the ball. Canyon has shut down most teams passing games and made big plays themselves.

Aside from the colors how does the Hawks remind you of El Dorado from the past two years? Maybe on offense, but LH's D-Line doesn't resemble a Wilson-Laurenzi line at all.
