The Calhoun Six to Watch: Marina vs. Western

October 7th, 2008, 7:09 pm · Post a Comment · posted by Damian Calhoun, OCVarsity.com since 2004

Marina (2-2) vs. No. 19 Western (2-2)

Friday, 7 p.m., at Western High

Overview: Is there a more hard-luck team in the county than the Pioneers?  Western could easily be 4-0. However, the Pioneers lost to Fullerton by eight points and to Tustin by five points.

Now, they have to deal with the Vikings, a Pac-5 school, but one that has already lost to Westminster.

Western has the ground attack (Quincey Kizee, Mookie Cooksie and Ruben Ortega) to control a game and wear out a defense.

The Pioneers have to avoid penalties and stay out of long-down-and-distance situations.

On the other side of the ball, the Pioneers will have to try to slow Sam Wilson. In his past two games (both Marina victories), Wilson has rushed for 230 and 223 yards. (If he gets 200 again, we’re going to have to give him a nickname.)

Quarterback Zach Couey will be the best quarterback that Western has faced this season.

What will a victory mean to Marina heading into Sunset League play?
