COSTA MESA — Fountain Valley led from start to finish in its 17-3 victory over Palos Verdes in nonleague play Thursday night at Orange Coast College.
The Barons (4-1) scored first on a 5-yard pass from Dominic Ragland to Artie O’Keefe to take a 7-0 lead at 2:58 in the first quarter.
The Sea Hawks (0-4) connected on a 35-yard field goal to close the deficit to 7-3. Fountain Valley responded with a 22-yard field goal to push its lead to 10-3 at intermission.
Kyle Middlebrooks broke a 41-yard touchdown run early in the fourth, and the Barons led, 17-3, with 11:41 left in the contest.
Though Fountain Valley dominated throughout, Coach John Shipp said his team needs to clean up its play.
The Barons committed 9 penalties for 90 yards.
“We need to work on that,” Shipp said. “It was nice to get the win but the penalties set us back.”
Barons pick each other up
Fountain Valley quarterback Steven Santana was on the sidelines Thursday night sporting his Letterman’s jacket.
Fountain Valley lost Santana in the first half of its second game when Santana fractured his collarbone in two places.
Santana may be out, but he’s not forgotten. His close friend and wide receiver Ryan Manzon has been wearing Santana’s No. 22 jersey ever since to support his teammate.
“We’ve gone back since junior All-American,” Manzon said. “He’s the leader of our team. I wanted to represent his number and honor him.
“I called Steven one night and asked him if I could do it. Coach said it was alright.”
Santana said it was hard dealing with the disappointment of the injury at first, but he’s doing every thing he can to cheer his teammates on.
“Football is the only sport I play,” Santana said. “It’s the only sport I dream about. Me and Ryan are like brothers. All the Barons are brothers. It’s the Baron community.”
Santana and Coach John Shipp said there’s a chance Santana can return this season, even if it’s just for the playoffs, granted they make it.
“We’re hoping he returns,” Shipp said. “He’s the captain. I know he wants to come back.”
