NO. 3 MATER DEI (3-1) VS. EDISON (3-1)
Site, date, time: Orange Coast College, Fri. Oct. 3, 7 p.m.
Outlook: Esteemed colleague Dan Albano picked Edison to win. Albano studies thoroughly before predicting winners. There is a lot to like about Edison, and for a lot of the same reasons as in every since, well, since the school opened, really. The Chargers have a dynamic offense, they are quick and sure-tackling on defense, they have camaraderie that is very obvious, and Coach Dave White and staff always have the guys ready to play.
But the pick here on this one is Mater Dei, if Mater Dei can do what Servite did when the Friars beat Edison last week – pressure the quarterback. The Monarchs defense is allowing 32 points a game – perhaps more than their boys basketball team will allow this winter – but they have played some high-scoring teams like Centennial of Corona and Los Angeles Jordan. Mater Dei quarterback Matt Barkley already has thrown nine interceptions. With top offensive tackle Chris Ward back in the lineup, Barkley won’t face such a nasty pass rush any more. Twice during the Centennial game, after an incompletion, Barkley jogged to a receiver to discuss the play, an he was not tapping himself in the chest, which is the universal football language of “hey, my bad.” If the receivers and Barkley get that connection going, the Monarchs will win.
Winner: Mater Dei
oh really ,, I tought u predict against Mater Dei…
Yeah, 32 points a game for the MD Defense. What did they give up last year? Probably around 30 as well. The new 3-3-5 doesn’t seem to be the answer (especially when you try and play zone behind blitzes). If it weren’t for the high-powered offense of last year they would have been lucky to go 6-4. When will Rollo cut the ties that bind (friendship) and get a new Def. Coordinator. It’s no coincidence that MD hasn’t challenged for a title since Eric Johnson left as DC. With EJ the Monarchs played a simple, well disciplined D without 300 checks and adjustments. If Rollo wants to put MD back in a Ring he needs to do 2 things:
1. Can the defensive staff. Connor, Richman (who does half of the scheme and can’t coach man coverage), all but Harp (an integral part of the “Program”).
2. Quit running your team inot the ground down the stretch. 4 hour full contact condition laden practices in weeks 8-14 is archaic and just plain stupid. Gosh darn it, give your kids a chance, give ‘em some legs to play on. Rollo, don’t take as long as you did with Begany, just get a replacement that’s not a felonius scumbag thief. Swallow your pride and bring EJ back. The defensive staff you need now resides at CDM; Johnson, Reddy and Blackburn. Or you can remain loyal to your buddy Dave who would sell you out for a buck if he could and see nary a ring for the rest of your storied(???) career at MD.
Edision will win, Albano gets one right. I haven’t been a fan of his predictions but I will definitely side with him on this one. Edison got beat by Servite last week but believe me, it could of easily been Edison who won if a couple things went their way. Mater Dei is not the team of past, they are going to come in 3rd place this year in the Trinity; yes, behind #1 Servite, and 2nd OLU. Edison is a great team and will prove that.
Just a thoughts predictions, Edison by 14 points. Barkley another 2 interceptions…
This is going to be a great game to watch. Everyone who attends will get a good showing. Both teams will show up and be ready to play. The fact that Edison lost to Servite last week concerns me though. I predict Edison will win because of this. Great Charger teams in past history rarely lose two in a row.
In the past we have dominated Mater-Dei, I’m talking way back. My Chargers are tough, and can score. However, last week was a hard hitting, physical game against Servite. This preseason schedule is brutal for my Chargers. We need a pass rush from our DL. Mater-Dei does not have anyone like Servites Portis. Lets play the game Fryer.
P.S
I watched last weeks game against Servite from my home in Las Vegas.
looking ahead to 2010. check out our roster!!! nothing but Jr”s and Soph’s. Look out!
Barkley has thrown too many picks but is still managing to throw TD’s, but Matt Viles is doing really good on offence
both defences arent that great
so i think the game will be up to there defences
